Singer CG-590 Sewing Machine

I needed a light commercial type sewing machine, that would deal with home projects like curtains, dog bed repairs, jean zipper replacement etc., I got my friends and family input on the make and got a resounding Singer vote. I reaserched the models online and this model kept getting great reviews for ease of use, reliability and being a great home machine for dealing with just about any project. Singer offer such a great warranty, that I was convinced, (even though I had not had a chance to try one out), that I was not going to be disappointed, I was right.
This is a great machine, it has some super features that may not seem a big thing but make this an easy and fun machine to use. Little rubber suction cup feet keep it from wandering off when you put your foot down and give it some gas. Finger protector works great, because when you do rev her up, be ready!! Got the guts to truck through anything I have thrown at it. The cotton reel holder is mounted horizontally, so it doesnt get snagged up if you are going at some speed. The top drop bobbin is also great, cant loose it in the machine or have to chase it under the table when you fumble it. Self threading needle gadget, the coolest thing ever!!!!
Has a nice selection of embroidery stitches, I'm not one for getting fancy with my sewing, but have made several things using the pretty stitch patterns and am quite impressed.
I even fixed a belly strap on one of my horse rugs with it!! If you know what a pain in the neck rugs are to get mended, you will understand what a versatile machine this is. Just remember to use the right needle for the weight of material/project you are working on.
A couple of small gripes, it looks like it is made of metal, however the body is plastic painted to look metal, but it realy doesnt make a whole lot of difference, it is sturdy and the important parts are metal. I have scratched the paint off when moving the foot plate out, which upset me a little, but you cant see it. Also the light is not quite bright/big enough, could be upgraded.
On the whole, a great machine for the money, a little more expensive than your average machine, but worth every penny. For the extra $'s, Singer back up their machines with a really good warranty, you can get parts just about anywhere or online.
I would recommend this machine to anyone who does lots of different projects, repairs, dress making, etc. It may be a little too much for a beginner, but an experienced sewer looking for a reliable machine to run up yards of curtain, put in zippers, do a little fancy stitch work on some throw pillows wont be disappointed.

The service I received was prompt and professional. As for the actual machine, it leaves a few things to be desired. First of all the color sucks all the light out of the area and it creates a dark difficult place to work. I had to get a new light so I could see. Everything is just so dark and the machine itself offers little light. I like the speed of the machine. It really moves. I haven't been able to get a decent button hole. The thing I like about it least is that there isn't much space between the foot and the base. So even if you can sew through many thicknesses, I don't know how to get that much material in because space is limited. I wish there were a few more stitches, also. I traded in another mechanical singer that had more stitches, but not as much power. I don't know if I made the right move. It's got great power, but the drawbacks are more than I anticipated. I also don't like the automatic needle threader. The directions on how to use it are poor and 50% of the time I can't make it work easily so I just do it by hand. I think the concept of this machine is good, but I don't know if it was engineered to be user friendly.

This machine surpassed my expectations. I am use to sewing on commercial machines and have found domestic machines slow and unstable. This is a solid machine that does niot move when you sew. It sews easily through 4 layers of denim, but handles thinner fabrics with ease as well. I like the automatic needle threader and the 4 step buttonholer makes buttonholes a breeze. My only critisicm is the light, it throws poor light, but I sew using a lamp so it is not a deterrent for me.
I purchased this machine to have something to use until I decided which machine I wanted - Look no more!!!!

I bought this machine for my wife. She is a seamstress
and works at the local Harley Davidson dealer sewing patches
on jackets and vests for the riders. This machine was listed
as being a commercial grade machine, but it is not. The foot
of the sewing machine does not raise high enough to get leather
wear under it. I tried to point this out to the seller and tell
him it is not a commercial grade machine. His response was to
post a message that I was trying to sew 12 layers of leather,
when in reality it won't sew even one layer... For all other
projects, my wife loves this machine. The speed is unreal and
she loves the ease of working on this machine. We recently found
a 1955 Necchi sewing machine on ebay and purchased it. The all-metal
Necchi can sew through beer cans with no problem. Now we have one
machine for heavy dute projects...and one that stays home for
domestic projects.

Powerful but Fustrating
| No, I would not recommend this product.

Needed a machine that would do varing layers of material and some heavy craft type sewing. I assummed from other demonstrations of sewing machinges that things like changing the color thread often was a simple task. Based on the videos of this machine in action I thought this would be just what I needed. This machine sews like a dream, has a lot of power and does all it said it could, but it is very complex and hard to get ready to sew(this they forgot to say).I haven't been able to get the auto needle threader to work yet! I had to send the whole machine in for repair because the timing wasn't set up right when I received it. It takes just about as much time to get this machine ready to sew as it does to get the job done it seems like. The machine's lighting is not good so it is hard to see your work especially THREADING the needle by hand!! I looked at some other machines in the same price ranges that didn't have as powerful of motor but were very easy to use,set up AND THE NEEDLE THREADER WORKED!! I wouldn't buy this machine again for my type of use. If you did a lot of sewing and didn't have to THREAD the needle it would be okay. For most types of sewing I would get something that wasn't so fustrating to prepare for use.
