Album Notes
Liner Note Authors: Eddie Dean; Billy Altman. At 150 tracks spread over 11 discs, this Time Life set is certainly expansive in its archival salute to singer/songwriters -- from Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Billy Joe" to Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way," and touching base with the likes of Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Carly Simon, Paul Simon, Janis Ian, Gordon Lightfoot, Van Morrison, and countless others along the way, it pretty much circles the wagons around the modern singer/songwriter era. The songwriter isn't always the singer here, though, which leads to the inclusion of things like Joan Baez singing Robbie Robertson's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and Roberta Flack singing Ewan MacColl's "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," which -- definitive as these versions may or may not be -- raises the question of whether everything ever recorded could well have fit here under that kind of umbrella, since every song ever sung was written by somebody somewhere. That said, there are plenty of appropriate gems here, and like all Time Life collections, it's well assembled and features very good sound. ~ Steve Leggett

The problem with box sets like this from Time Life is that they always contain some songs that either are not good enough (filler) or not the songs by the artist that should have been selected.
Now this set I think contains about 150 songs and I oounted only about 24 that I think should have been replaced by others so that is a pretty good percentage. And some of the songs are the only song you would really want by the artist in question so it's a nice collection.

This is an amazing set. We love listening to these oldies and even my 20 year old has loaded them to his computer. You won't be disappointed. They are crystal clear, you hear it better than we did at the time, over the radio.

This is a beautiful CD set. It brings back so many wonderful child hood memories and helps to lower my blood glucose lever and lowers heart rate and blood pressure, which is what my Dr. wanted. No more Lisinopril for me.

If you love Rock n Roll or oldies--this is it! We could not be happier. Excellent mixed collection of every hit song you can remember from 60's on. Great sound; no reproductions. Definitely worth the price and the same thing they sell on tv for hundreds.

A MASTERPIECE of the greatest musical collection ever assembled for those of us who spent our teenage and young adult years listening to our 8-track players and the radio. This collection brings back memories of a time gone by that was simpler and less stressful and I can hardly wait to share it with my friends. There is no doubt that these classics will make you sing with joy or cry with happiness. I strongly recommend this artful collection of some of the best music ever written and produced to those of you that remember GOOD music with lyrics that can be heard and make sense. ~ Leslie
