Movie synopsis

It's spring 1941, and Great Britain is the only country in Europe yet to be defeated by the Nazi army, but all of that could change soon. The Nazis have launched their juggernaut battleship, the Bismarck, to close off British supply lines and ultimately invade England. A counterstrike is ordered, and with an arsenal of ships at their command, Royal Intelligence officers Jonathan Shepard (Kenneth More) and Anne Davis (Dana Wynter) fight desperately to destroy the Bismarck. Director Lewis Gilbert delivers a heartfelt docudrama about the courageous men and women of the British navy. Featuring actual war footage and a roller-coaster plot, the film is an unforgettable document of world history.

Historical FACT with some fun fiction~ Very good WW2

Created: 13/04/08
based on HISTORICAL FACT OF WW2 SINKING OF THE GERMAN BATTLESHIP THE BISMARK.

PLOT: SINK THE BIGGEST GERMAN BATTLESHIP CLEVER blend of historical fact with some very good characters~

We see the German NEWS release of the biggest Battleship in the German fleet the BISMARK sailing and the threat of holding off ships while it could sink a whole fleet of ships due to the biggest guns in the world on any ship up to date~ (1939 that is) so the Bismark has too make IT from Hamburg Harbour to THE Atlantic with every ship the Brits can send to sink her~ good special effects of the tracking of the Bismark by the Brits so they can mass a group of ships to sink her but the clever German Captain and Admiral are as smart and elusive which adds to the chase. We see the battle from the German side the young Captain who is very Nazi and wants to win his victories along with the die hard Nazi admiral on board the Bismark and from the Brit side we see the YOUNG handsome Kenneth More assigned in the Admiralty to sink the ship using any means he can including the Air Craft Carrier his SON is on~ very good use of characters and historic FACT~ does not drag but flows along nicely~ we know the BISMARK IS GOING TO BE SUNK BEFORE we pop the dvd in but the fun part is watching "how" they did it~ great special effects for this time~

I give it a solid 9 out of 10 for adventure~ and WW2 tale~

One of the Classics of WWII movies, it tells the story of the breakout of
the German Battleship Bismark and the mad chase by the Royal Navy to find
and destroy her. The movie gives very good coverage of the fight and
destruction of the mightiest British Battleship of the 1940s, HMS HOOD,
and the engagement of serveral other British capital ships with the Bismark.
The final engagement with aircraft of the Royal Navy, the torpedo engagement
and final destruction of the Bismark earn top ranks also. An "inside" story
is the expection that the German air coverage is expected to protect the
Bismark right up to the end with her sinking-by the admiral in charge of the
Bismark and her Captain. A GREAT movie for WWII and history buffs.

This is a good movie that covers a great story. Admittedly it is basically told from the British perspective and the British naval officers benefit from some good "home cooking" while the German officers are demonized, which is how it was done back in the early post WWII days. The cast is strong and likable and the script follows historical fact pretty close, except for the creation of our central characters who are ficticious.
The battle scenes are excellent for its day, but one must wonder how spectacular they would be in a remake given today's technology.
Still a good watch though even today....and a must for any serious collector of World War II naval history.

It is very Classic films and i just wishes that it was in color. I love that film! This film was about great German Battleship and German Admiral made grave error that caused rudder to be damaged by the topadoes from British Swordfish, unable to out maneuver the British warships.

Sink the Bismarck show us what it was like for men and women in the underground
office of the British and on the sea trying to get the job done. It is a taut
drama one not miss.
