    Product description

    Synopsis
Five hundred years ago Michelangelo began work on a painting that became one of the most famous pieces of art in the world-the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Every year millions of people come to see the largest fresco painting on earth in the holiest of Christianity's chapels; yet there is not one single Christian image in this vast, magnificent artwork. This book tells how Michelangelo embedded messages of brotherhood, tolerance, and freethinking in his painting to encourage "fellow travelers" to challenge the repressive Roman Catholic Church of his time. Authors Blech and Doliner reveal what Michelangelo meant in the angelic representations that brilliantly mocked his papal patron, how he managed to sneak unorthodox heresies into his ostensibly pious portrayals, and how he was able to fulfill his lifelong ambition to bridge the wisdom of science with the strictures of faith.--From publisher description.

    Publisher's Note

Five hundred years ago Michelangelo began work on a painting that became one of the most famous pieces of art in the world—the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Every year millions of people come to see Michelangelo's Sistine ceiling, which is the largest fresco painting on earth in the holiest of Christianity's chapels; yet there is not one single Christian image in this vast, magnificent artwork.

The Sistine Secrets tells the fascinating story of how Michelangelo embedded messages of brotherhood, tolerance, and freethinking in his painting to encourage "fellow travelers" to challenge the repressive Roman Catholic Church of his time.

"Driven by the truths he had come to recognize during his years of study in private nontraditional schooling in Florence, truths rooted in his involvement with Judaic texts as well as Kabbalistic training that conflicted with approved Christian doctrine, Michelangelo needed to find a way to let viewers discern what he truly believed. He could not allow the Church to forever silence his soul. And what the Church would not permit him to communicate openly, he ingeniously found a way to convey to those diligent enough to learn his secret language."—from the Preface

Blech and Doliner reveal what Michelangelo meant in the angelic representations that brilliantly mocked his papal patron, how he managed to sneak unorthodox heresies into his ostensibly pious portrayals, and how he was able to fulfill his lifelong ambition to bridge the wisdom of science with the strictures of faith. The Sistine Secrets unearths secrets that have remained hidden in plain sight for centuries.

A pair of distinguished scholars identifies and analyzes secret messages encoded within the Sistine Chapel's ceiling fresco, revealing how the master Renaissance artist imparted messages of brotherhood, tolerance, and revolution to interfaith free-thinkers and Kabbalists from his period. 50,000 first printing.

    Sistine Chapel Secrets of Michaelangelo

    Created: 16/10/08
I read this book in a day since it was so interesting and a true eye opener on the creator of the Sistine Chapel paintings, Michaelangelo. The authors weave a blend of sleuth work and history to make a strong case for the secret meanings behind Michaelangelo's paintings on the walls of the Sistine Chapel in the 16th Century.
While I think some of their points are a bit far fetched (like the outlines of Hebrew letters in the gaps and spaces of certain illustrations), I do think the authors make a great case for Michaelangelo's belief in the universality of man and their rights to worship God each in his/her own way.
The book surely filled a gap in my knowledge of those wicked times when christianity was just about to come out the Dark Ages, but not just yet since the heads of the Catholic Church were steeped in all kinds of immorality.
I highly recommend this book to al lovers of truth, justice and history, religious ot otherwise.

    Totally fascinating!

This book is absolutely fascinating and I just could not put it down - and I honestly cannot usually say that about most books. I decided to buy it after taking a trip to Rome and seeing the Sistine Chapel - now I wish I could see it again, as it would be a different experience, knowing what I do now! I had already read the book when I bought this copy - this one I purchased for a friend. It's one of the few books I've ever raved to other people about and one of three I've bought for another person knowing they would love it too.

So informative, and much better than any detective story. You learn, and you go back to more sources, and you end up knowing so much more about Michelangelo, Kabala, and you appreciate everything more
