Movie synopsis

Teen angst abounds in this classic comedy written and directed by John Hughes. Samantha Baker's (Molly Ringwald) 16th birthday should be perfect and memorable. Unfortunately, her whole family is preoccupied with her sister's impending wedding and completely forgets Samantha's big day. To add insult to injury, the school geek (Anthony Michael Hall) won't stop hitting on her, she has to bring a foreign exchange student (Gedde Watanabe) with her to the school dance, her visiting grandparents have taken over her bedroom, and she's sure that the boy of her dreams (Michael Schoeffling) doesn't know that she exists. Hughes's script captures the range of teenage emotions, from embarrassment to peer pressure to the pangs of puppy love, with humor and honesty. Hall is memorable as the Geek, and Schoeffling is perfect as the boy of Sam's dreams. A young John Cusack makes his second feature-film appearance as the geek's friend, Bryce, while sister Joan Cusack appears as Geek Girl #1. Ringwald's reign as the queen of 1980s teen flicks began with this film, which was Hughes's directorial debut and the first in his stream of successful teen films (THE BREAKFAST CLUB, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF).

Sixteen Candles with Molly Ringwold

Created: 19/08/07
This movie brings back memories of the past. My brother and I loved Molly Ringwold in many of her movies but this one was completely appropriate for my brother's birthday being that I forgot his birthday. He told me he'd been "Sixteen Candled" and I laughed so hard remembering the scene in the movie where her sweet sixteen had gone unnoticed by her father and others. My mother nor his young wife got the joke because they had not seen the movie. So, I was thrilled to find it and in DVD form. After ordering the movie we decorated everything we could and celebrated the forgotten birthday to the hilt! Thank you for adding a special component of the forgotten day.

s birthday this year because.... I forgot his birthday! His remark to me was that he'd been "Sixten Candled" and I laughed hard remembering the scene in the movie where her sweet sixteen had been forgotten by her dad and others. Anyway, my mother nor his young wife had seen the movie so we were happy to find a copy on DVD! Thank you! No more forgetting special birthdays!

A John Hughes classic movie. Funny to watch over and over again. Other than some questionable jokes, great to watch with older children. Nice to have something that teenagers can relate to without being to risky. Feel good movie!!

This is the best movie from that period. Over the last 10 yrs or so there have not been any movies that compare to this one. Its a classic and my sis and I watch it all the time and love repeating the lines. There really is nothing in this movie that isnt funny. We will continue to watch it until the DVD falls apart.
