The Skeleton Key (HD DVD, 2007)

Iain Softley, Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

After New Orleans hospice worker Caroline (Kate Hudson) answers a help wanted ad, she finds herself working as the live-in caretaker of Ben Devereaux (John Hurt), a stroke victim who has lost his ability to speak. Ben's wife, Violet (Gena Rowlands), presents Caroline with a skeleton key to open any door in the house--with the exception of one, which she claims she has never been able to open. But curiosity gets the best of her, and Caroline opens the door to find a wealth of materials representing the old house's history of hoodoo, an ancient form of folk magic. She soon discovers that the house harbors a dark secret--one that Violet knows more about than she first admits.Breaking her string of lighthearted romantic comedies, Kate Hudson gives a performance that proves she's more than capable of playing a feisty damsel in distress. Ehren Kruger's (THE RING) script gives her some physically demanding scenes, while providing the audience with a steady string of effective jolts culminating in a SIXTH SENSE-style twist that few are likely to see coming. Louisiana's swampy, heavy atmosphere is literally a character in the film, while Gena Rowlands, at age 75, astounds once again with one of her most surprising roles.

Uncut - Nick Hasted (09/01/2005)

Great Movie But Expecting More...

Created: 01/01/10
I thought the movie was a great movie but was expecting more with the trailers. The twist at the end was one I was expecting given the plot line. Too predictable in that regard but was still good. Kate Hudson was phenomenal in the movie as she always is. I would reccommend to anyone to see.

I enjoyed the movie and wouldn't be heartbroken if there was a sequel to it. The movie is never dry. I would like to see a sequel where the main characters in this one see an end to their power. I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone else but my friend who lost her movie is going to replace it soon because she really enjoyed it.

HD DVD Skeleton Key

I like the round bottom and especially the curves. I decided to buy it because it was cheap. I also like the way it plays, fast just the way I like it. The acting was good but the drama was even better. At times it seemed a little fake but don't they all. Compared to other HD DVD movies this one was probably one of my favorites. Enjoyed it hope to watch it again.

Great Movie even better on HD-DVD

Created: 02/08/07
HD DVD is encoded in High Definition 1080p format. The movie its sharpness, and eye-popping colors are just stunning. Black levels are inky with excellent grey shadow detail, and contrasts are deep. The movie itself is great and if you are already a fan of the DVD the HD DVD is what you want. One problem with HD is that with the HD/Blu Ray debate some stores are not stocking them until there is a clear winner. Not to worry, the store below has hundreds of HD DVDs broken down by genre:
