Movie synopsis

SKINS, based on the novel by Adrian C. Louis, is the impressive second feature of Native American director Chris Eyre (SMOKE SIGNALS). Filmed on location at the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota reservation in South Dakota, SKINS tells the story of Rudy (Eric Schweig), a policeman, and his older brother Mogie (Graham Greene of THE GREEN MILE), a jobless alcoholic. Mogie had once looked after his kid brother, but his experiences in Vietnam left him a bitter and broken man. Rudy frequently gives money to his mischievous older brother, which Mogie spends on beer. Frustrated with rampant alcoholism and crime on the "rez," Rudy becomes a vigilante. While Rudy thinks he's doing the right thing for his people, his extralegal activities lead to tragedy. SKINS is a powerful drama laced with acerbic humor. The film captures the harsh realities of Pine Ridge life with affection and wit, and breaks down negative stereotypes about Native Americans by portraying Mogie as a complex and ultimately very sympathetic human being. Eyre manages to make important points about contemporary Native American life without heavy handedness. His cast is very strong, particularly Greene, who delivers a phenomenal performance in this exceptionally moving and humane film.

Skins Native American Indian Pine Ridge South Dakota

Created: 11/02/09
It has actually been awhile since I have seen this film, but wanted to add it to my collection as there is no nudity or sexually explicit material in it. That is rare nowadays. If that is your thing this movie is not for you. It deals with life on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Alot of it is harsh reality and Graham Greene plays a wonderful part in it. If you are a Graham Greene film this is DEFINETLY A MUST SEE. You will be thinking about the film long after you watch it.

Beautiful movie about life

This movie has it all. Good story, good acting, humor, tragedy. It shows a real relationship between two brothers, the good and the bad. Graham Green is funny and lovable as Mogie. He is the reason I wanted to see this, but the whole cast is amazing. I love that this was actually filmed on the Pine Ridge reservation. I just wish there were more movies like this.

Skins

Inspiring, refreshing, Spiritual----In todays scene, with all the "so called Reality" shows, and insignificant uninspiring movies----This movie-SKINS--is a much needed TRUE REALISTIC VISION of people, sharing todays problems of alcohol, addiction, in a human, heartfelt way. This is a movie to be shared-All the actors, actresses, and extras did excellent work. My only complaint is that there aren't more movies along this line in the mainstream of society today, as there is a definite need for it----Hoping there is more to come from this talented director, producer, and crew!----AAA+++

Skins is a wonderful movie and handsome Graham too!!!

Skins is a wonderful movie. The setting is the poverty stricken yet culturally rich Pine Ridge Reservation of the Oglala Sioux. It is a story of a family and it is a story of our country. I loved it because it was also a movie containing characters with internal conflicts of every imaginable sort. Of course, being that handsome Graham Greene plays the drunken and conflicted character, I ordered the movie immediately. I found myself connecting with many of the movie's characters. It's a must-see for an intelligent movie goer who wants to experience an interesting plot and well developed characters. Mary Paddlety

Teaching Reality Tool

Created: 07/02/08
I bought this movie because I am Native American in Native American ministry. I try to study all aspects of different Native lifestyles. This movie is about Pine Ridge Rez, a place I am currently interested in helping. The movie shows aspects of life on this Rez in it's raw reality. I would like to know how best I could help at Pine Ridge. Therefore, the movie was not just for personal entertainment, but as a teaching tool for myself and those who work with me. I appreciate the stark reality of this film.
