Slap Shot (DVD, 2002, 25th Anniversary Edition)

George Roy Hill, Paul Newman|Theatrical release: 1977 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A rougher version of George Roy Hill's pet theme of men as overaged adolescents, SLAP SHOT stars Paul Newman as Reggie Dunlop, the venerable player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a fifth-rate minor league hockey team. When their blue-collar town falls prey to Rust Belt ills of the 1970s, attendance drops, and the greedy owner starts looking for a buyer, anxious to cash out. Dunlop is informed that the players need to crank up the box office to keep their jobs in what will likely be their last season. To the coach's dismay, general manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) imports the Hanson brothers, a hockey Three Stooges who like to assault soda machines and play with toys. But once Dunlop turns them loose, they're a Panzer division on ice, and the team starts winning by adopting their bone-crushing style. Although the team is on the upswing, Dunlop's wife, Francine (Jennifer Warren), seems to be through with him, and the isolated wives of the other players aren't much happier with their fate. This sidesplitting, profanity saturated film is one of the funniest ever made about any sport. While writer Nancy Dowd intended to probe darker issues--such as the greed of ownership, the blood lust of fans, and the childishness of the players--Hill submerges them in raucous laughter. Newman is near his peak as the romantic, manipulative, womanizing, hard-drinking coach, and the high-sticking Hanson brothers achieve comic immortality in their only film appearance.

A good Laugh at the ridculous

I am a serious fan of hockey and bought this DVD on the recommendation of many hockey players that voted Slap Shot as one of their all time favorite movies. It's about a team that cannot win a game until they bring in new players, well known for their roughness. Although Slap Shot is not a great movie it has very funny moments. Even if you aren't a fan of the game, you could enjoy the absurdity of some of the characters such as the Hanson brothers; the only way the three brothers know how to play the game is just down and dirty, which turns the team around and they start to win games. One players refuses to play dirty but in the end (the very end) it's his actions that help the team to victory. If you want a light-hearted look at the game of hockey, Slap Shot is worth the purchase.

SLAPSHOT IS A CLASSIC !

The great Paul Newman gives a hilarious bravura performance as Reggie Dunlop player/coach of the downtrodden minor league hockey team the "Charlestown Chiefs". Supporting cast, soundtrack, sreenplay and direction(the wonderful George Roy Hill)are all top notch. A few years ago the "Hanson Brothers" from this film were voted the most famous hockey line of all time ! Thirty years later this movie is still outrageous and funny !

What more could you want from a hockey movie?

Created: 21/01/09
Obviously the best hockey movie....ever...period.

Paul Newman leads a great (albeit non-star studded) cast in this late 70's tribute to the crazy life of players in a minor hockey league. Low pay, bad conditions, angry fans, and failing franchises mixed with hard working, hard living hockey players.

I've always said that the minor league is the real hockey league even though the NHL overshadows it with bells and whistles. Minor league players hit the ice for the love of the game and a chance to be called up, whereas the NHL players play hard, but they are paid well and have made their place and have little to prove to anyone. Minor league players are the real blood, sweat and tears of this game, and this movie not only shows that, but offers up some damn good laughs along the way.

Did I mention that it's hilarious?

A cult favorite among hockey fans, "Slap Shot" is a modest film that has shown great durability even with wider audiences. The infamous Hanson brothers have gone on to fame & celebrity, and the initial outrage the hockey establishment felt toward this satire of the dark side of the sport has mellowed into mythic affection. Employing both broard and droll humor--and everything in between--you hardly notice that "Slap Shot" is also a serious but unpretentious look at the collapse of American small city economic culture. With a terrific cast, led by a salty Paul Newman, and a knowledgable script by Nancy Dowd, sister to a professional hockey player at the time, it's the kind of well-made, well-intended small film that Hollywood, sadly, is no longer capable of or interested in making. The only film that Gene Siskel admitted he was wrong about.
