Slither (DVD, 2006, Anamorphic Widescreen)

James Gunn, Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Here's a gooey, hilarious, creepy horror film for the whole mutant cannibal family. Michael Rooker (HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER) stars as Grant, a big bald guy from a small southern town who gets possessed by a meat-hungry parasite worm creature from space. Even under the alien influence he still loves his wife, Starla (Elizabeth Banks), but she's alarmed at his weird new habits, such as consuming all the local wildlife. The sheriff in town (Nathan Fillion) investigates. He still carries a torch for Starla from when they were kids, but once the squirming, slithering, and cannibalism begin in earnest, it becomes clear that this is no time for romance. SLITHER's combination of interesting characters, deadpan humor, gore aplenty, and genuine scares earns it a place alongside cult classics like RE-ANIMATOR and the various LIVING DEAD and EVIL DEAD films. Director/writer James Gunn wrote 2004's DAWN OF THE DEAD before this, and it's abundantly clear where his loyalties lie: SLITHER aims its acid-dripping, brain-sucking tongue right into the hearts of horror fans. Heads explode, monsters squiggle into gaping mouths, tentacles wrap around Banks's negligee-clad body, and the sheriff takes it all in his stride. There's even a twisted intergalactic love story somewhere in the chaos, as well as hordes of in-jokes for the fans.

"Gunn lovingly hacks up the whole horror-comedy genre with the giddily disgusting tale..." -- Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (04/07/2006)

"[W]hat makes it work is how nimbly it slaloms from yucks to yuks, slip-sliding from horror to comedy and back again on its gore-slicked foundation."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (04/11/2006)

"SLITHER is a throwback to the playful, squishy, slightly queasy-making horror films of the 1980s..."
Los Angeles Times - Mark Olsen (04/02/2006)

B-Movie masterpiece

Created: 08/05/07
With homages to the genre it creates a worthy laughable Saturday night cult classic. Perhaps even worthy of Mystery Science theatre. Written and Directed by James Gunn- its creepy, humorous and downright gorey. It all starts when Grant Grant (Michael Rooker), a rich guy in a small town gets infected by a alien virus that makes him perpetually hungry. But he still loves and stalks his much younger wife Starla; portrayed by Elizabeth Banks. Starla notices husband's new unusual behavior and his ever present his physical changes. As he continues to transform- the stuff hits the fan. And all they have to save them is the town sheriff-Billy Pardy.Billy Pardy is played by the underrated genius of Nathan Fillion-best know for his role in the cult Tv masterpiece known as "Firefly". Here he plays a small town southern Sheriff who must channell Bruce Campbell's Evil Dead character "Ash" or have his town and then the rest of the world consumed. A must see of any horror/comedy fan (and thats why i bought it). And for the Troma fans- A cameo by Lloyd Kaufman.

Comedic horror

Created: 27/10/08
Mixing comedy and horror must be tricky, because rarely does cinema achieve the perfect balance between yuks and yuck. The gold standard might be An American Werewolf in London. But if you enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, you really should give Slither a look. Nathan Fillion does a take on the cowpoke leading role he had in the late, great tv show Firefly (and its followup film Serenity), as he tries to protect his town and his girl, the delicious Elizabeth Banks, from a slimy invasion. The special effects are mostly good, too, with something for everyone. The zombie-like victims are lots of fun, as is Gregg Henry, familiar to fans of The Riches on FX. He plays a similar role here, as the inimitable loudmouth mayor. Director James Gunn's one-time wife, Jenna Fischer (The Office) is underused in a bit part. At 96 minutes, this movie never feels slow or sloppy -- it holds you right 'til the end. Slither doesn't break any new ground, but it does do everything just right. And there's a standout sequence later in the film, revolving around the song You're Every Woman in the World to Me. This movie is a big step up from James Gunn's previous outings as writer of Scooby Doo and its sequel. If you're a Buffy fan, you may give this film a B+. And if you love this film, then you should dive into Buffy and Angel. In either case, be sure to watch all the way through the credits --

And You Thought That You've Been Taken Over by Slugs?

Created: 11/04/09
The only thing that I can easily remember good coming out of 2006 was this movie. To say the least, it was high time that someone really epitomized the essence of a good Alien Bodysnatcher movie. Well, this is the one. When Alien broke ground in the late 70's, most people had never been so terrified before in their lives. Up until that time maybe Jaws was the scariest monster movie out there.

Slither takes a stab right at the movies that never try to encapsulate the pure evil of organisms infesting humans. These things thrive inside of a human long enough to get bigger and multiply and then they move on into another host. If you have a weak stomach or don't like to feel disturbed about alien invasions, then do not watch this movie. This was Rated R for Strong Horror, Violence and Gore and some Language.

Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks did remarkably well in holding this movie together while Director James Gunn has moved in to the Horror Hall of Fame forever more for this one.

Check Out the GAG reel as well. You will certainly squirm out of your chair or bed on this one.

Night of the Creeps Meets Love Story

Created: 28/10/06
Slither is not your run of the mill horror movie, it is more a homage to creature features of the 50's. If you loved The Blob and Night of the Creeps - and who did not love them?! - then this one is right up your alley.

Slugs from outer space crash land on Earth and infect a man. Seems like the slugs and the man merge consciousness so what the man held precious the slug does too. When all hell breaks loose the only one that has any influence with the slug/man/squid is his wife.

A little slow but there was no way around that - the background story had to be told. Nathan Fillion is...well, Nathan Fillion is a god. What can I say, I'm a Browncoat. Gregg Henry and Michael Rooker are fantastic! Both are really good actors and funny as hell.

Nice and gory, smart, funny and very profane. This is not for everyone and if you have a bad reaction to Air Supply's Every Woman in the World then you will have to cover your ears for some parts of this movie - it is their song!

Instant Cult Classic!!!

Created: 22/10/06
Although the plot feels like it has been done before, 'Slither' stills feels original in the fact that it has never been done like this. Aliens take over but in the most grotesque way imaginable. WARNING!!! You may want to have an empty stomach before watching because the effects are done really well and are quite disturbing at times. The cast does a solid job but Nathan Fillion steals the show with his quick one-liners and humorous attitude. The story is predictable though & there are not many surprises besides the amount of disgusting scenes. But any horror or alien invasion fan should enjoy this movie. Good enough to buy but you should probably check it out first. Must see film. 4/5
