Slumdog Millionaire (Blu-ray Disc, 2009, Checkpoint; Sensormatic; Widescreen; Includes Digital Copy)

Danny Boyle, Dev Patel, Irrfan Khan|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

British director Danny Boyle (TRAINSPOTTING) travels to India for this film starring Irrfan Khan and Anil Kapoor. In SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, a young orphan rises above his roots in poverty to win both the ultimate prize on India's WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE and the heart of a former love., British director Danny Boyle takes another intriguing career turn with this heartfelt underdog tale. Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is a street kid (or "slumdog") who has landed an appearance on India's version of the hit TV game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? Jamal exceeds expectations on the show, and the producers alert the police after they become suspicious of his methods. The young contestant is subsequently arrested and is interrogated at the hands of a nameless police inspector (played by Bollywood star Irfan Khan). As the interrogation proceeds, Boyle tells Jamal's story through harrowing flashbacks that both show the terrible poverty of Mumbai and help explain how he knew the answers to the MILLIONAIRE questions. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is a tightly woven story that has been expertly edited into shape. The contrast between Jamal's upbringing and his chance of escaping it on the show are adeptly juxtaposed. Mumbai is portrayed as a place of terrifying poverty and unforgettable brutality, and Jamal and his brother get into a never-ending succession of challenging situations. But the way Boyle ties together Jamal's life experiences with his answers on the show is quite brilliant, and the film really does run the full gamut of emotions as we see him growing up, falling in love, coming close to death, and teetering on the brink of escaping from his terrible predicament. The film belongs to Boyle's cast, who are mostly unknown outside of India. Patel, in particular, gives a startlingly mature performance that audiences are likely to remember long after the credits role on this affecting feature.

WOW is right

Danny Boyle has been a favorite of mine since I saw Shallow Grave, since then he's gone on to make three masterpieces(Trainspotting,28 Days Later and Millions), a near perfect film(Sunshine) a guilty pleasure(The Beach) and a total miss(A Life Less Ordinary). Slumdog Millionaire comes out of nowhere and it could very well be his best film and one of the best films of the decade. Visually like Boyles previous work it's stunning, Apocalypse Now and City of God come to mind and there are dutch angles galore. The raw style mixed with the amazing locations make this film one of the most cinematic experiences you'll ever see. The Sound is perfect, I haven't heard audio like this in a while. This film needs a Sound Oscar nomination, it sounds that good. I went into seeing this knowing very little about it and the person I took with me didn't know anything about it, so I'll just say it's about a young man that goes on Indias Who Wants to be a Millionaire, it's a very unconventional film where they tell the story of his life in flashbacks while he plays the game. It's funny, sad, thrilling, basically a very enjoyable film that deserves numerous Oscar nominations. Also the lead actress is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen, if she isn't a huge star after this I'd be extremely surprised. If the academy doesn't honor this film with numerous nominations it will be a shame but this film will be studied in 20 years and whoever sees this will love it, so even if it doesn't get a single nomination it won't matter. Don't miss this film, it's perfect!

What I thought...

Created: 03/03/11
What can I say about this movie that hasn't been said before? It's a very stylish new idea that hadn't been brought to the screens of Hollywood - and was reserved enough to not be a typical Indian movie. The storyline is one of the most original ones of recent times, thereby explaining the numerous Academy Awards it has won. The upgrade to Blu-ray was a very wise one, as the nitty gritty grain is preserved so beautifully especially on the streets of Mumbai, really bringing out the slum-ridden type of lifestyle that unfortunately remains in India even now. The movie itself is an enjoyable ride from beginning to end, I highly recommend it!

Slumdog Millionaire is a Masterpiece of Film!

This movie was remarkable. Nothing short of gripping and attention grabbing, I greatly enjoyed watching this movie. Seeing a Westerner's view of life in India was quite interesting, and not wholly exaggerated. It was truly amazing and Blu-ray quality made it even better.

Loved this movie ! ! ! Such a relief of watching something outside of Hollywood typical movie. I know this does not show exactly what it is like in India, but it was a pleasant and riveting movie that kept me on edge trying to put it all together from the start. Great Soundtrack and the Gal is absolutely Gorgeous ! ! ! Seven Pounds, Grand Torino, Marley and Me and this movie BY far the best of the year ! ! !
