Album Notes
Offspring: Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar); Noodles (guitar, background vocals); Greg K (bass); Ron Welty (drums, background vocals).Additional personnel: Jason "Blackball" McLean (vocals).Recorded at Track Record, North Hollywood, California. All songs written by Offspring except "Killboy Powerhead" (The Didjits).Personnel: Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Jason Blackball McLean (vocals); Noodles (guitar, background vocals); Ron Welty (drums, background vocals).Recording information: The Hook, North Hollywood, CA; Track Record, North Hollywood, CA.Photographer: Lisa Johnson .Building off the success of its Orange County, California hardcore roots and a feature spot in snowboarding advertisements, Offspring is suddenly seeing more commercial success that it ever could have dreamed of when it was formed as yet another Southern California hard-core punk act in 1991.SMASH is a generous helping of guitar power-pop. The delightful Middle-Eastern surf guitar on "Come Out And Play" hides harsh sentiments in poppy guitar riffs. Singer Dexter Holland mocks the school systems that think the solution to school violence is to "keep them separated," to segregate rather than educate the kids about the dangers of carrying guns. As Holland advises his fans, "Hey pay no mind/If you're under eighteen you won't be doing any time."Offspring's power is in writing anthemic guitar rock that effortlessly slips from genre to genre. From the humorous ska-flavored "What Happened To You?" to the sing-along guitar riff in "No Self Esteem," SMASH is by no means a smash hit, but it has certainly gotten the exposure this one-time hardcore band deserves.

Editorial Reviews
6 - Good - ...Being dynamically punk and showing a wide perspective aren't mutually exclusive. When Offspring discover that, they'll be bloody dangerous...
NME

...Fortunately it doesn't take a genius to appreciate Offspring's simple songwriting smarts...A nice shot of adrenaline from a socially concious syringe...
Musician (19940801)

...Rarely has a band so dextrously combined such apparently discordant elements into such a delicious whole...
Alternative Press (19940801)

3 Stars - Good - ...Call 'em punks if you want to, but a song [Come Out And Play] this cannily designed, arranged and executed is worthy of the best rock-songwriting tradition...

Offspring - Smash

Created: 19/11/10
One of my favorite albums ever, an Offspring classic with such hits as Come Out And Play and Self Esteem. My favorites here are Nitro, Genocide, Not The One and Smash which is my favorite Offspring song ever! If you like this album, you should also pick up Ixnay on the Hombre and Ignition.

Third Record

Created: 02/03/08
As far as I know this is the Offspring's third album. At first I did not like it as much as ignition. It seemed raunchier sounding but more uniform lyrically. This album grew on me over the years though. I don't even listen to the singles anymore. It is not as uniform as my 14 year-old self thought. "Nitro" is about the ephemeral nature of our life(a common theme in their work.) "Genocide", and "Not the One" are political declimations of resposibility to some extent. "Smash" was my anthem in school. And the cover song "KillerBoy Powerhead" has a beat to it that I find irresistable. Enjoy.

And you don't already have this why?

If you've never heard of this album, then you have no business here. This album broke The Offspring and a new era of punk rock WIDE OPEN. It features level of energy seemingly unattainable by The Offspring in comparison to their earlier and later efforts. Although this is not the best punk album of the era, it is beyond sentimental to many of us. I revert to my first sentence.
