Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; David Crosby, Graham Nash, Neil Young, Stephen Stills.Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, keyboards); Graham Nash, Stephen Stills (vocals, guitar, keyboards); David Crosby (vocals, guitar).Audio Remasterer: Joe Gastwirt.Recording information: Record Plant Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Record Plant, Los Angeles, CA; Wally Heider Recording Studio 3, Los Angeles, CA; Wally Heider's 3, San Francisco, CA.When the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young compilation SO FAR was released in 1974, Neil Young had already been gone from the group for two years and wouldn't return for another 14. Although the collection bears the quartet's name, material is also included from Crosby, Stills & Nash's self-titled debut album. The quartet had only released one studio album, DEJA VU, but the music they made was monumental and--in keeping with the times--was both deeply personal and overtly political. However, as a compilation of some of the group's finer moments, it is a satisfying listen, and proved a huge commercial success.Songs such as the gently romantic "Our House" and stylistically shifting "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" sidled up beside more topical fare like Neil Young's "Ohio" (written about the National Guard's shooting of protesters at Kent State) and Graham Nash's socially conscious "Teach Your Children." The quartet's most distinguishing characteristic was their crystalline harmonies, brimming over in all their compositions--particularly on the lovely "Helplessly Hoping" and the brief a cappella tune "Find The Cost Of Freedom," while the group's musical ambition shines through on the complex arrangements of "Déjà vu." While fans who own the original albums will find nothing new here, SO FAR is an excellent introduction to one of the highest profile groups of the late '60s.

So Far - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CD 1994)I

I love the fantastic voice of Young on this CD- just great! Songs like Teach Your Children, Ohio and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes really bring back old memories. The Crosby, Stills, and Nash are a great group but with Young in the group he really adds some special harmony. It's slower music than I usually go for, but it has a wonderfully, reflective and meditative mood. Enjoyable as background music or right up front and center.

Sparrow's Opinion

It almost doesn't get any better than this. I listened to and learned these songs as a child. My mother had a van and she drove us everywhere with our friends. We would sing along to these tunes. We especially loved "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Our House", and "Teach Your Children." As an adult, I can appreciate more some of the less commercial songs, such as "Wooden Ships," "Guinevere", "and "Deja Vu." This is classic, true, edgy rock and roll.

Rediscovering a Jewel from my Youth

Created: 20/08/07
My parents used to have a bunch of Stills, Nash, Young, & Crosby (and various combinations of those singers therein) records. And I remember my dad in his big jean bell-bottoms and big hair-sprayed hair pulling these black vinyl disks ever-so-carefully out of their liners and placing them on the recordplayer only using the palms of his hands. I have no idea what happened to our family albums, but I remember the music. And I've always wanted (somewhere subconsciously) to get my own recordings of them. So, "So Far" is part of my journey back into my childhood music memories, and it's more potent than I remember. This album is legendary; it's in the halls of historic "American" music. It tells of a time in the 60s when there were civil clashes, because people felt a power to band together and try to create change. The album cover is an illustration by Joni Mitchell (to boot). The songs which are like the B-side songs on this album shine just as brightly as the A-side. (Okay, yeh, I miss the vinyl.) The harmonies are so beautiful - a blending of 4 guys' voices in a way that's familiar, not distant like church choir harmonies. Some of those songs have moved me to tears, because they feel so real, and, well, they bring back good memories of the 70s.

So Far - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Always loved the work of C,S,N & Y. Had their music on LP's & got rid of them several years ago when CD's became the craze. Decided to add them to my CD collection & found this great classic for a great price.

I SOOOO love this CD!

Created: 07/01/07
I think this CD brings back more happy memories from my youth than any other collection of music on the planet. As soon as I hear the opening notes my whole body relaxes and I feel happy. Even the "sad" songs are associated with my generations efforts to "do the right thing", and that brings satisfaction that goes quite well with the happiness and contentment of the other songs.
