Movie synopsis

Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) is a love-shy "poet" living in San Francisco, who frequents neighborhood coffee houses reciting his tortured odes to unrequited love. Burned by a string of failed relationships, Mackenzie's fear of commitment has intensified into outrageous extremes of paranoia. When he finds himself falling for the sweet-faced butcher (Nancy Travis) at his local meat shop, he sees it as a final chance for love to overcome his painful cynicism. Feeling he has squelched his nagging fears, Mackenzie marries the woman. But his anxiety quickly manifests itself in the conviction that his betrothed is actually an infamous axe murderer whose antics are described in juicy detail in each week's issue of the Weekly World News. Myers also plays his own father, Stuart Mackenzie, a football-loving, Rod Stewart-singing Scotsman who repeatedly refers to Charlie's over-cranial younger brother William as "Head."

GENIOUS! A cult classic you've GOT to own!

Created: 14/07/07
At the time this movie was released, few people really "got" the absolute genius of Mike Meyers. It may not have done well in the box office, but it has developed an enormous cult following of all ages. Mike's "beat" poetry as he works his way from one OCD-strangled relationship to another is hysterical. The obligatory montage scene is a joke in itself, and again, Meyers is flawlessly funny.

Yet, behind the comedy is an off-beat horror story that really does give you chills and makes you have to catch your breath more than once.

There are numerous hysterical cameos by the likes of Charles Grodin, Steven Wright, Phil Hartman (just call him "Vicky"), and Alan Arkin. This is truly Mike Meyers at his most original and comedic best. If you don't own this movie, "you'll be cryin' yerself to sleep tonight on your huge pilla."

MIKE MYERS IS HILARIOUS!

Created: 15/01/10
This feature has a young Mike Myers (pre Austin Powers) at his best and funniest. Myers plays "Charlie" as well as "Charlie's" zany Scottish dad. Brenda Fricker is "Charlie's" mom. Nancy Travis plays "Harriet" comically and beautifully. This is a delightful comedy set in San Francisco.

Great Movie for Any Mike Myers Fan

Created: 04/09/07
Great movie for any Mike Myers fan! The Scottish Dad character was based on his real life dad. You can see where the Fat B*****d part in The Austin Powers series comes from. Some surprise cameo appearances! Good family movie for kids with maybe a little parental guidance. There is a slapstick action ending that may be too intense for real little ones. Some smoking and drinking. Language is (for the most part) family friendly.
Not the greatest movie overall. But if you love Wayne's World and can deal with a movie a little dated (1992?), this one is a must! Also, kind of a cool soundtrack. Includes the Scottish Dad playing Bay City Rollers real loud! What a laugh!

Great cult movie

Created: 02/08/07
Fantastic early Mike Myers film. This movie showcases a young Mike Myers playing a character not inspired by SNL. It is a great little comedy, good acting, with hints of several more main-stream Mike Myers characters built in. As if this were a test bed for his later films, like the Austin Powers series. I actually like this film better b/c he isn't completely over the top with himself, and acting and storyline quality were still an issue this early in his career. Most likely, this film didn't take off so well in the theaters because of the title. Amazing what a little misguided marketing can do.

Mike Myers' best movie ever

Created: 04/12/10
This is one of my favorite movies, quirky humor. This was Mike Myers' first real movie on his own, it's funny to see mannerisms and inside jokes that show up later in the Austin Powers series, this movie gives you the back story on a lot of the lines that have become catch phrases. It's well worth watching, the family relationships and the love story really hit home.
