Cassidy, a native of Washington D.C., gained local favor with her pure, straightforward tone and her lovely, tasteful interpretations of everything from standards to gospel to contemporary pop.SONGBIRD is a definitive best-of selection that picks from Cassidy's studio albums and shows the depth and breadth of her skills. SONGBIRD's perfection as a compilation is in its song choice, which covers Cassidy's takes on gospel ("Oh, Had I A Golden Thread"), soul (Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready"), pop (Sting's "Fields of Gold"), and well-known standards ("Over the Rainbow"). Cassidy's own perfection stems from her ability to bring the same precise, inventive phrasing and crystalline tone to each individual song, regardless of genre, making it indelibly her own. This collection became a best-selling number-one album in the U.K., and with good reason.

Editorial Reviews
3 Stars (out of 5) - Eva Cassidy had the power to leave the nerve-centre tingling. She possessed a rare emotional honesty and a knockout voice (closest relation: Roberta Flack) and applied them to whatever material took her fancy...
Q (19990301)

3.5 stars out of 5 - ...She effortlessly shuffles styles and the song selections are astute...Cassidy comes across as a bluesier version of English folk singer Sandy Denny....she melts her personality into the fabric of each melody...

Voice of an Angel

Created: 11/01/09
After hearing and enjoying a couple of Eva Cassidy's songs, I decided to give her Songbird CD a try. Am I ever glad I did! Her voice is soft and gentle one minute, then strong and powerful in all the right places. Her music is a mix of jazz, easy listening, pop, blues, folk and gospel. And her interpretations of some old favorites are nothing short of amazing. Her "Over the Rainbow" is soulful, her voice clear and pure. If for no other reason, buy the CD for this song ahd "Songbird." Now THIS is music -- perfect pitch and straight from the heart.

If you want to hear samples before you buy, go to Amazon and search her name. But trust me, if you buy any of her CD's, you will not be sorry.

Sadly, cancer (Melanoma) stole this amazing talent in 1996 when she was only 33 years old. All but one of her CD's were released posthumously. But we are blessed that there were recordings that could be put together on CD's for the world to hear.

Songbird purchase for My Mother In Law

Created: 10/02/08
A few years ago I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of Eva Cassidy singing 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' - and thought -- "that's the most beautiful voice". After listening to the rest of the song, the announcer mentioned her name and that Eva had died recently of cancer.

Of course over the next week I bought every Eva Cassidy CD available.

Last year my Mother in law came for a visit and I played her some of Songbird for her. Of course she fell in love with it as well. I promised to copy the song to a CD for her and of course, never did. Finally around the holidays I just decided to send her one through Ebay.

I have the purchasing habits of my grandparents. buy it in a store, dig through the house, find a box, pack the item, wrap it, take it to the PO and mail it. My Ebay shopping experience was fantastic! I like it so much I bought other stuff for family for Christmas -- what a sigh of relief! I loved having someone else do all the work for me.

Reasonably priced, original packaging.

My Mother in law LOVES her gift. (Of course playing it on her bose stereo doesn't hurt the sound.)

Stunningly Beautiful Voice, Silenced Too Soon

Created: 06/12/10
A friend sent me a link to a video featuring a song done by Eva Cassidy, and the music was so compelling that I had to learn more. There are a few female vocalists in my collection, but very, very few contemporary artists. I just haven't heard that many that really made me want to sit back, close my eyes and just listen, but this lady captured my attention. The cd is nicely produced, the music complements her voice nicely, and her voice is purely enjoyable. Contemplative, thoughful, the music and her songs make me want to stop what I'm doing and just immerse myself in the sound. I highly recommend this, but caution that it might not be a good one to play while working; I experience severe productivity depletion while listening. Considering the short time that singer Eva Cassidy was with us, her contribution to our listening pleasure was immense. This cd is an important part of my music collection now; I can easily imagine my children and grand-children cherishing this music for years to come. It is truly timeless.

Eva Cassidy's "SongBird"

Created: 08/05/09
I became a fan of Eva Cassidy after hearing her rendition of "Over The Rainbow" during the opening credits of "Alpha Dog." I absolutely had to have her CD. She has a beautiful, bluesy voice, and she conveys passion in every song that she sings. It is a shame that she is no longer here to supply us with her beautiful lyrics and her powerful voice, but her Songbird cd will will live on as one of the best CDs of all time.

Songbird- Eva Cassidy

Created: 10/08/07
I purchased this CD after hearing it at a friend's home. I was extremely impressed by the ethereal quality of Eva's voice. Her wistfil interpretation of Over the Rainbow is by far the best I have ever heard. Upon research I was saddened to learn that she had passed away but I'm left with a sense of completion knowing that she has now arrived the other side of the rainbow. Fields of Gold and the Autumn Leaves are equally impressive as she literally floats over the notes like a warm breeze on a lazy sunlit afternoon. This album is one that no music library should be without.
