Auditory Excellence. Her fourth solo release in 15 years, "Songs of Mass Destruction" does not disappoint with powerful lyrics seamlessly interlaced with beautifully composed music.
When the incredible Annie Lennox released her solo debut CD "Diva" she set the gold standard not only for herself, but for the entire music community. Her follow up CD of covers, "Medusa" was finely crafted and gave the listener many hours of pleasure. On her third CD, "Bare" she returned to original compositions and it was a joy to immerse yourself in it. But now, Annie, with "Songs of Mass Destruction" has raised the bar, and created a platinum standard that will stand unchallenged. It's a truly iconic CD, one of those "must haves" for your library.
She has surpassed herself, deeply personal and insightful lyrics and expertly honed melodies. "Dark Road" soars as a ballad. "Ghosts In My "Womankind" is catchy with a hook that grabs you and refuses to let go. "Through the glass darkly" is a harrowing yet lifting ballad, and "Fingernail Moon" is a gentle, successful foray into whispery vocals and engaging lyrics. "Lost" has echoes of the moving and beautiful Beatles song "She's Leaving home", and "Love is Blind" just plain rock. "Coloured Bedspread" hearkens back to the electronic '80's, but sounds surprisingly fresh and new. In an age of one or two decent songs per album, Annie Lennox delivers and entire album. There isn't a misstep or insignificant song in this collection.
With this release, Annie has not only reconfirmed her composing skills, but she hasn't lost her chops vocally; if anything she's matured as a singer with nuanced phrasing. This CD is for the discerning and mature listener, whatever their age.

Annie picks up right where she left off on her last effort, BARE, this work is a natural and dynamic progression. A brilliant juxtaposition of up tempo and "laid back" (if she can ever be laid back) ballads, showcasing one of the greatest voices of our time. Exceptional, brilliant, and I feel like I didn't pay enough money to deserve this masterful work. How many ways can I say I love it? Also, don't be mislead, "Songs of Mass Destruction" has an obviously metaphorical title, but doesn't in any way become a political soap box. Enjoy. Sweet dreams are made of this.

The Distinctive Voice Is Back

When the radio comes on and you know the voice, it indicates the uniqueness of an artist. Annie Lennox falls into this category - which is a good thing.
SMD is a good album but is still a bar or two below Diva. I enjoyed Bare more than the average fan and I would put this one in the same league. Good but not great.
Just being good is not a bad thing when you have the vocal talent of a Lennox so I still recommend buying this to enjoy a great talent still going strong as she works into her 3rd decade.

Annie Lennox is an amazing force in music.
If you liked BARE, this cd far surpasses it. It is hard to explain. BARE was a masterpiece, but this album is even better! She's amazing and never stops delivering thrills through song!
