Album Notes
Personnel: Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer (vocals, guitar); Eric Singer (vocals, drums); Gene Simmons (vocals).Audio Mixer: Greg Collins .Recording information: Conway Studios, Hollywood, CA (08/2007); Henson Recording, Hollywood, CA (08/2007); The Nook, Studio City, CA (08/2007).Photographers: Dean Snowden; Dean Snowden; Neil Zlozower. When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high. In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks such as the Gene Simmons-sung rockers "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" and "Russian Roulette," sit ambitious pieces such as "Stand," which employs a Motown-influenced chorus melody, sophisticated arrangement, and Beach Boys-style harmonies, and "All For the Glory" and "Lightning Strikes," which are vocal showcases from new guys Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer (respectively). Interestingly, both Singer's rasp and Thayer's slightly off-kilter delivery are highly reminiscent of their famous predecessors, which further contributes to the album's distinct Kiss-ness. Overall, though the record doesn't pack quite the same lean, mean, gritty punch as early classics like DESTROYER or KISS (or Ace Frehley's own 2009 album ANOMALY), it is a clear return to the sound of archetypal Kiss.

Editorial Reviews
There's no denying the pleasingly hook-laden nature of such anthemic rockers as BOOM's 'Stand' and Modern Day Delilah'... -- Grade: B

Ranked #40 in Spin's 40 Best Albums Of 2009 -- [P]erhaps their best album ever. No, really.

It's a breath of fiery air, then, that their latest is as close to a return to classic form as anyone could reasonably expect.

Great KISS Album

Created: 30/10/09
This is really a good album. The new music is just GREAT. Great riffs, sold vocals, guitars and drums! I think this is the best KISS album of all time. I also like the fact KISS re-recorded some of the best hits using modern recording technologies and included Eric Singer (one of the best drummers in the business) and Tommy Thayer on guitar. I still love that original music as well and now ever note is crystal clear. Great sounding.

Rock on, and Rock on with KISS! Alan

Kiss Sonic Boom

I've been a diehard KISS fan for the past 32 years, there's simply no denying the fact that this is not only one of KISS's best studio albums of all time but also the best album released this past decade. The Kiss Klassics CD and live in Buenos Aires DVD are the icing on the cake. A must have for any Kiss Army fan.

Kiss Sonic Boom

Created: 08/10/09
The first album released by Kiss since Psycho Circus came out eleven years ago. And I must say they didn't disappoint. Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer did the band justice on their first album together. Eric Singer has been with Kiss on and off since Revenge and he proved he still has what it takes. Every single song on the album is a hit. They did the entire album with analog recording. No digital enhancements. It is simply awesome. Buy it now if you haven't already!
