Movie synopsis

Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

No child's education is complete without this movie

Created: 30/08/07
The sound of music is the greatest movie ever made for children with a beautiful mind to absorb greatness which is the spirit of the nurturing that Ms. Julie Andrews represents for our world in this respect. With some of the greatest songs ever written and a very nice story to go with it all but mainly the lovely presence of Ms. Andrews and her impression on the children as she imparts a better vision of the world and what it has to offer in a rich existence and with sound meaning for what it really means to be superior thinking in the most intelligently human way. No child should be without this movie, 500 families wait for a copy on a waiting list at the Toronto library. Shame on you is what I say to the likes of Bill Gates et al.

A Cinderella story set in early Nazi-occupied Austria. Take away Cinderella's broom, give her a guitar, take away her pumpkin/carriage, and give her drapes/playclothes, but with some of the best music ever written. Good, clean, G-rated entertainment for the whole family.

Sound of Music was a classic when I was a child and I purchased this DVD for my children. The music is great, the story is good for children under 10. A good all around family movie. We really liked it.

The Sound of Music (2002, DVD)

Excellent performances by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer make this movie a box office hit. The music is just out of this world and the kids who play the Von Trapp kids do a great job.
