    Movie synopsis

Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: Hitler is ascending to power, forcing Von Trapp to decide whether to join the Nazi party--which he loathes--or force his family to leave their home forever. One of the most memorable scores ever written (by Rodgers and Hammerstein) and breathtaking performances by Andrews, Plummer, and the seven children mark this classic as one of the world's most favorite films.

The Sound of Music (2005, DVD)

    Created: 15/02/07
Set against Hitler's impending WW2 annexation of Austria, this is a story of a young woman,s not cut out to become a nun, who goes to serve as a Nanny in a wealthy home in Salzburg. Maria is sent to care for the children of a widowered Army Austrian Captain and is the light and warmth the children need to blossom. This musical has an unforgettable score of timeless music (The Do Re Mi Song, My Favorite Things, Eidelweiss, The Sound of Music, to name but a few). It is shot on location in Salzburg, Austria. Having been to Salzburg several times, I find that the movie captures the hilly and green beauty of this part of Austria better than any travel film of the area I have ever seen. The wedding scene in Salzburg Cathedral brings this awesome place to life. A wonderful celebration of family, based on a the family Von Trapp's escape from the Nazis.

Movies are just not like this anymore. Julie Andrews is at her best as the easy-to-love Maria, who leaves her convent to care for seven children. The music is timeless and the story will capture your heart. A long film, even by today's standards, you won't notice three hour time lapse as you join the Von Trapp family again and again. A treat for all ages, this is definetly one to buy.

    The Sound of Music

My girls and I love musicals and this one of our many favorites. Had it on VHS and needed to replace on DVD. Seeing it fresh on DVD was great. The sound and color so much better. Music is wonderful, beautiful voices, great story about a real family. Must have for classic movie/musical lover.

    The Sound of Music DVD

    Created: 02/05/08
The Sound of Music comes on TV in my hometown every Easter, but I was frustrated because I could remember some parts that were cut out to allow for more commercials (or to fit in the time slot). Each year I watched on TV, it seemed the movie was shorter and the ads longer. So this year I treated myself to the real thing! And what a treat it is! This is the complete movie. The extras include a wonderful chat with the 7 actors who played the Von Trapp children, and a conversation between Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews, which felt like a friendly talk, not an interview. There's also a sing-a-long and features about the Von Trapp family and where the movie was filmed. This is a film that should appeal to everyone in your family.

    Somebody please SHOOT ME!!!

    Created: 28/07/07
This is the most HORRENDOUS piece of cinematic garbage I have ever been forced to lay eyes upon. It doesn't matter what format it's on. Whether it be DVD, VHS, Blue Ray Disc or telepathic implant, this movie still makes me want to blow chunks! I first saw this god-awful celluloid atrocity when I was seven. It was movie night. So, we all went out to the movies! I kept hearing from the adults all about "how wonderful this movie was" and "how I will enjoy this musical". When the opening scene comes on the screen, and we all see the beautiful mountains and lush green plains of Salzburg, Austria...and Julie Andrews opens with the verse, "The hills are alive with the Sound of Music", a lead weight just fell to the pit of my stomach. I knew at that moment, that this movie was going to SUCK LIKE A HOOVER UPRIGHT!!! And I wasn't wrong either. It was just awful. And there was no escape either. Because, when I was seven, it was 1973. VCR's didn't exist yet. And if they did, we couldn't afford them. There was no remote to simply SHUT IT OFF! I had to sit there for three nauseating hours! I thought when the Nazis arrived, they might liven things up. Nope! Didn't help! They were goose stepping to a cheezy musical number! Honestly though, "if "Oklahoma" and "South Pacific" are anything like "The Sound of Music", Rodgers & Hammerstein have done more to kill theater than John Wilkes Booth!
