Movie synopsis

In A SOUND OF THUNDER, based on a short story by Ray Bradbury, director Peter Hyams (END OF DAYS, TIMECOP) creates a world where time travel is possible and life as we know it is threatened. In the year 2055, Charles Hatton's (Ben Kingsley) company, Time Safari, will take anyone with a big enough wallet back 65 million years for the thrill of their lives: dinosaur hunting. Thanks to Tammy, a talking computer created by Dr. Sonia Rand (Catherine McCormack), the time-travel team returns with clients to a specific moment 65 million years ago, with explicit directions not to leave anything behind, change anything, or bring anything with them back to the future. Expedition leader Travis Ryer (Ed Burns) is certain that the protocol is flawless, but Dr. Rand isn't so sure. She knows that Hatton will cut any corners necessary to make bigger bucks, and she's waiting for the worst.Sure enough, a safari goes amiss when Ryer's gun malfunctions and he sends the clients scampering for cover from an irate dinosaur. The team returns to 2055 shaken but unscathed. The next day, all over Chicago, mysterious trees and vines begin springing up through sidewalks and out of walls. It seems that something went terribly wrong on the last jump, but no one can pinpoint just what it was. According to Rand, the problem will only worsen as "time waves" continue to sweep the planet, resulting in 65 million years of evolution and growth catching up with the present time. Soon, monstrous creatures--giant baboons with lizard-like features, bat-faced teradactyls, and huge sea serpents--abound, leaving Ryer and his team in constant danger as they fight the clock to determine what caused the anomaly and to save life as we know it.

A relatively interesting film to time travel buffs only

Created: 26/06/09
Just as I was slipping past my last scan along films at Blockbuster, I saw the cover to the illustrious A Sound of Thunder. First instincts were to grab it and skim over the back story line to see if I would be interested in watching it; and I was. I got back home, only to remember having seen this on the Sci-Fi channel about 6 months earlier.

The story-line goes like this: In the year 2055, wealthy hunters can travel back in time and kill a live dinosaur for a huge price. Sonia Rand (Catherine McCormack) developed a time machine. Charles Hatton (Sir Ben Kingsley) took the technology and opened a business known as Time Safari Inc. Anyone with the money, can travel back millions of years and shoot a dinosaur for sport. Dr. Travis Ryer (Edward Burns) leads his team together with the big game hunter on a floating walkway to a spot where they can kill the dinosaur. The trip protocol is that they must stay on the walkway and not disturb the land or any creature around them. Unfortunately, for the human race, one hunter steps on and kills a butterfly. This insignificant act causes major impacts to the earth's climate and creates new species of animal life. The course of evolution as we know it, is now being changed by time waves. Travis and Sonia try to stop the changing process before it becomes permanent, and man becomes extinct.

This film was great in a lot of ways, but fails to deliver on many of the 80 million dollar films promises. Although Ray Bradbury wrote this short story with the idea and intent of making a poignant appeal to modern man as his destructive nature tends to cause climactic upheavals by shaping defining moments.

Sorry I can't this film anymore than 3/5

Exciting Time-Travel Movie

Created: 31/03/08
I found this movie to be an exciting but out-of-the-ordinary science fiction movie. I love time-travel movies and, therefore, loved the Bradbury story concept of how tiny changes in the past can influence the future dramatically, especially when it involves evolution. This is not an acting film with lots of character development (Ben Kingsely did try) but had an interesting cast of American, British and German actors. The movie had fast-paced action mixed with huge scenario changes leading to quite a desperate race against time.

A Sound of Thunder (2006, DVD)

Saw this listing on ebay... went to review it on several movie web sites... most of the reviews there gave it bad ratings due to poor special effects, poor acting, etc etc, but I like sci-fi movies and had not seen this one. ebay price was good and purchased it... Low and behold, the day before my purchase arrived in my mail box, it was on the SCI-FI channel... so I watched it...

I personally liked the movie.. yes it had some low spots in it, but all in all, who knows what will happen in the future and I found it very exciting to watch. Since the viewing on SCI-FI channel, I have watched the DVD twice. Its not the best movie out, I like the old B/W B horror/sci-fi movies from the 50s/60s. But it does keep your attention and give you a totally different view on things. BTW: I do not like DUNE, StarWars simply for the fact I can't keep up with all the episodes... But give me a Freddy Kruger, Jason or Star Trek I'm there. Go Figgure !

All in all for me... its a good Sunday afternoon movie, get the food ready for BBQ, then sit down and watch the movie and then cook...

Does not follow the short story.

This movie is nothing like Ray Bradbury's short story. It is very Holloywood Dramatized. It did have a few good action scenes. Overall, they took a good short story and made it into something it is not. Of course Hollywood seems to do this a lot. Rent this movie, don't buy it.

Ended too soon

I love "end of the world as we know it" movies, so I thought this was pretty good. The special effects and acting were good, but the story could have been a little more involving. I wished they had cut out some of the slower parts and added some to the end of it. All in all it was worth my money and time.
