    Movie synopsis

Director Richard Kelly's follow-up to 2001's surprisingly popular DONNIE DARKO is a sprawling dystopian satire featuring an all-star cast and a storyline that splinters off into strange and unexpected places. The film begins with a nuclear explosion in Texas, which sparks a full-scale war between the U.S., the Middle East, and North Korea. Kelly's central character is action-movie star Boxer Santaros (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), who is suffering from a bout of amnesia upon returning from the desert. His reasons for being in the desert are hazy, but he's hooked up with porn star Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), and together they have written a screenplay about the end of the world. Santaros tries to prepare for the film by taking a ride with a cop named Taverner (Sean William Scott). But the cop is actually Taverner's twin brother, who is working for a shadowy group of neo-Marxists who are trying to overthrow the government. Meanwhile, a brilliant scientist (Wallace Shawn) unveils an incredible new energy source, the end of the world as predicted by the Book of Revelations draws ever closer, and Justin Timberlake (who plays an Iraqi war veteran) provides a voiceover that fills in some of the gaps. As the film builds to its explosive climax, the reasons for Santaros's time in the desert become clear, and the various strands of the plot are brilliantly woven together.SOUTHLAND TALES is packed with ideas, tangents, song-lyrics-as-dialogue (in particular, "Three Days" by Jane's Addiction), cameos from established stars, and plenty of references to the post-9/11 political landscape. Kelly's film is bursting with imagination, and it will undoubtedly need multiple viewings for everything to sink in. Comparisons to films as varied as Richard Linklater's A SCANNER DARKLY and David Lynch's DUNE are valid, but Kelly's movie inhabits a wonderful world of its own, and is one of 2007's most unique and inspiring pieces of filmmaking.

    Movie trailer and editorial reviews

"[A] dancing-in-your-grave pop extravaganza that is the CITIZEN KANE of our Fox News, E! Channel, surveillance cammed, multiple-fractured, post-9/11 collective delirium."
Film Comment - Amy Taubin (11/01/2007)

"It's a romp...a genre pastiche, a blast of conscience....SOUTHLAND TALES has more ideas, visual and intellectual, in a single scene than most American independent films have in their entirety..."
New York Times - Manohla Dargis (11/14/2007)

3 stars out of 5 -- "The best part is its Terry Southern-style madness and wonderful depiction of America as it seems today."
    Empire - Damon Wise (01/01/2008)

3 stars out of 5 -- "[I]n Kelly's dark, dystopian vision, everyone is a culprit. Amusingly berserk."
    Uncut - Damon Wise (01/01/2008)

"[I]t nails the dystopia-of-the-spectacle in which we are living right now, as profoundly as Godard and Warhol did in the mid-Sixties."
Film Comment - Amy Taubin (01/01/2008)

"Amy Poehler and Wood Harris shine as an improv act tied up in a neo-Marxist conspiracy..."
Sight and Sound - Henry K. Miller (02/01/2008)

    Don't expect another Donnie Darko

    Created: 19/03/08
Many of us have seen hundreds, if not thousands of films. Once in a while a movie comes along that tickles your brain in new ways. Whether you like it or not, it has an impact. Movies like Blue Velvet, Repo Man and Brazil. This is one of them.

Southland Tales is basically a collection of great moments pulled off by a great cast and a brilliant director. Think of 20 wonderful YouTube clips strung together in an interesting yet incoherent way. And believe me, numerous scenes in this movie will be YouTube hits.

This isn't a movie for most audiences. You won't relate to any characters, and you won't follow or really care about the preposterous plot. It is dark and cynical. And despite it's heavy-handed political story, there is no deep, introspective meaning behind anything whatsoever. This is why many people won't get it, and thus will hate it. It's a dark film with a dash of comedy and a heavy dose of LSD. But there are enough funny moments to save it from feeling like a depressing, bad trip.

Critics have used the word mishmash - and it is. Just like David Lynch and Terry Gilliam, Richard Kelly is clearly conflicted between telling a coherent, compelling story while simultaneously expressing his creative vision. Sometimes you have to choose one or the other, and he chose the latter this time. Which is fine by me. This movie is a gem, and if you are confused or put off by the plot, just pay attention in the beginning. The entire story is explained very early on during a movie pitch scene. After that, all that matters is you enjoy the ride.

And one last note to Kelly fans. Do not expect anything remotely similar to Donnie Darko. Very different type of film. The only similarity is the amazing soundtrack

Great Movie, but not for everyone!

    Created: 09/06/08
I personally loved this movie! It was written and directed by Richard Kelly, who also wrote and directed Donnie Darko. This movie was a cross between Donnie Darko and The Fifth Element, mixed with a good cast; The Rock, Sean William Scott, Justin Timberlake, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. Like Donnie Darko, Southland Tales is a movie that is extremely difficult to understand and at times it seems like there is no plot. For those that like strange movies and don't mind movies that have difficult plots to understand, then this movie is for you!

This was kind of a different kind of movie.I liked some of the stars in the movie.Sarah Michelle Gellar,The Rock,Sean William Scott,Justin Timberlake,
Mandy Moore.Justin Timberlake I don't really like. Not based on his performance.I just don't like him that much. The main reason I bought this movie was because of Christopher Lambert. He's one of my favorite actors. The original Highlander. He has a lot of great movies. This movie was ok.
