Spaceballs (DVD, 2009, Widescreen; Movie Cash)

Mel Brooks, Bill Pullman, John Candy|Theatrical release: 1987 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In this spoof of STAR WARS and a handful of other sci-fi flicks from the 1970s and '80s, space-bum-for-hire Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-dog/half-man sidekick, Barf (John Candy), must rescue a spoiled Druish princess (Daphne Zuniga) from the evil Lord Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) in time to pay off Pizza the Hut. With SPACEBALLS, director Mel Brooks is at it again, this time with a science-fiction parody with all the blue-screen special effects and weird makeup (though in this film, things are always slightly off-kilter and unpolished). Here, maverick space travelers set out to save the planet Druidia, which is being harassed by the Spaceballs, a sinister group attempting to pilfer Druidia's air resources. Among the many gags and jokes is a hilarious parody of a classic scene from ALIEN. Mel Brooks himself makes one of his funniest acting appearances as Yogurt, a send-up of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK's Yoda.

this is one of the best spoofs ever!

Before I begin explaining what makes Spaceballs great I feel there is a need for a disclaimer: if you don't like sci-fi TV shows and films (especially Star Wars) the chances are that half the jokes will be lost on you. Furthermore, it should be noted from the start that Mel Brooks's humour really is an aquired taste - and whether you will enjoy this film really does seem to pivot on whether you will enjoy the ridiculos and silly in a film or not, since most of the comedy arrises from the fantastic, silly plays on words or simply slapstick.
All this perhaps sounds somewhat juvenile, but it is the slickness of performance (especially the fantastic Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet) and the sheer wit of Brooks that makes this film so much more than it should be. Dark Helmet himself is a hilarious parody of Darth Vader, the humour being conjured by the conflict of Helmet's nerdy interior with helmet up to his harsh Vader-like act with his helmet on, further helped by his hilarious voice as Vader. Indead Moranis's Helmet plays fantastically well off George Wyner's Colonel Sandurz who supplies the straight man to the absurd Moranis, perfectly mimicking the sci-fi number 2.

While of course a spoof movie in itself will hardly appeal to all, especially those not too fond of sci-fi, Spaceballs is probably the best around of its genre and, while it doesn't offer the variety of movie references for a film buff that Hot Shots might, Brooks's clever ideas and scenarios more than make up.

LOL Funny!

Mel Brooks does it again! He is great at coming up with movies that you can't help but laugh out loud at! Starring Bill Pullman and John Candy, this movie is a spoof off of several others including Star Wars and Alien. With a hint of romance, a touch of action, and a big piece of Pizza the Hut this is a great movie to see! You will also see Mel Brooks (who plays a couple characters), Daphne Zuniga, and Rick Moranis in this movie. And if you really enjoy this one, a sequel is being made right now!

May The Farce Be With You

This is a classic that any movie buff should have in their collection. Spaceballs is a movie that you pass on to your children, and your children's children. Not only does it have a stellar cast, including Rick Moranis, John Candy and Bill Pullman to name a few, but you have the genius of Mel Brooks movie production to go along with it! This is a spoof of Star Wars, and rivals that of "Airplane" brillance. They did the right thing by not creating a sequel to this movie, it is a must have!

Hilarious!

This is one of the funniest movies ever made. A must see spoof of Star Wars and Star Trek. Rick Moranis, John Candy, Bill Pullman, and, of course, Mel Brooks keep the laughter coming.

My all-time favorite Mel Brooks film

Created: 28/09/06
Being both a Star Wars and Star Trek fan, I still find this movie hilarious. Some of the humor, such as the "Druish" (Jewish) princess jokes, might not be politically-correct anymore ("Jewish princess" used to be a term for a spoiled rich girl) but Brooks himself is Jewish, and the jokes are all in fun. In fact, there are a lot of Jewish in-jokes, such as giving the Princess back her old nose (hooked, of course), the doctor practicing his "putts" (think Yiddish...) and Yogurt's "merchandising" scene. (That's Brooks playing Yogurt, by the way. He is also Prsident Scroob, which is ALMOST "Brooks" spelled backwards.) Puns abound -- can of Perri-Air, "jamming" the radar... Then there's the power of the "Schwartz" in the magic ring... but ot te more would be a spoiler. I watch this when I need a good dose of silliness with a strong Yiddish flavor :)
