Industry Reviews
"[This] book is also keenly aware of the corrosive details of outsiderhood and the gap between home and daily life at high school....[T]his is a gripping account of personal wounding and recovery."

Amazing.

Created: 04/05/09
When I bought this novel, I had already read it, and I wanted it in my collection just to have on hand when I felt the urge to puruse it again. It is a detailed account of a young teenage girl, completely aware of the breakdown she is in the midst of. It is thrilling, heart-wrenching, and shocking. Beautifully written and shockingly truthful, this novel is one that only those mature of mind will fully understand in a psychological sense, but that anyone of any age can enjoy. Laurie Halse Anderson is a prose poet into the teenage soul.

This story is so well written. Straight forward & real, it guides the reader of any age or sex through a horrible ordeal. I think it can be used as a tool to show the steps of healing. I am so glad I read it. I have seen the movie as well & the book & movie compliment one another. The author brings you through the ordeal of rape with the young Melinda with great insight. The perspective is spot on. Excellent book. I am very glad my children, son & daughter, have read it in school & at home.

Inappropriate

I purchased this book because my daughter needed a book about coming of age. I am disapointed because of the language. Very inappropriate. Lots of profanity and shocked that this is acceptable in a high school book. The story line was good and it had a good ending but I should have picked a different book.

Although required reading for our local Jr. High / Middle School . . . WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???!?? Why are our kids required to read about a 14-year-old girl raped by an upperclassman at a high school party . . . isn't there already enough exposure to violence on the evening news without forcing it into our kids' curriculum too?
