    The Star Is Broke

This movie stars my all-time favorite actress, Bette Davis!! Not too familiar with it and since I had never seen it offered for sale in any store, I curiously bought it here on half.com.

This movie is certainly not the best feature performance from Bette, but it is definitely worth watching. For one thing it produced her 9th and final Academy Award nomination.

The movie supposedly is based on the life of Joan Crawford, who turned the role down, and was filmed in the 1950s before either actress was real old. It truly depicts how even rich Hollywood stars and athletes can spend all their money and end up poor. In the case of this star, Margaret Elliot (Davis), she spent her money helping her family and particularly her mother, so it was not wasted. But what happens to The Star after her finances hit bottom is the subject of this movie. For one thing, she meets and is forced to move in with one of her fledgling movie co-stars, Jim Johannson (Sterling Hayden). She drives DUI, works at a perfume counter in a store like Macys, and tries to get back into the movies--really botching a possible part meant for a woman her age but interpreted by Margaret as an ingenue. At least this movie has a happy ending.

We also get to see Natalie Wood in the role of Gretchen, the child of Margaret, who lives with her father and step-mother,
while Margaret has worked as an actress.

If you like Bette Davis, however, Now Voyager, All This and Heaven Too, Dark Victory, The Letter, and Dead Ringer are my favorite picks.
