Movie synopsis

While back on Earth, standing trial for their hijacking of the starship Enterprise (see STAR TREK III), Kirk and his crew are thrust into a new adventure. A space probe threatens to destroy the planet if it is not allowed to continue its longstanding communications with a certain species of Earth mammal -- humpback whales. Unfortunately, there is an obstacle to their simple demand; the whales are extinct in the 23rd Century. So Kirk, Spock and the gang travel back in time to San Fransisco, circa 1986, where they battle culture shock, as well as the clock, while trying to corral a few friendly whales to bring back to the future. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score.

Beam Me Up! Save the Whales!

Created: 05/08/09
Star Trek IV has an interesting premise-- the crew has to save the Planet Earth from certain annihilation from a giant probe by traveling back in time to save the humpback whales.

Whoa.

I am a late convert to Star Trek. I admit, I prepped for 2009's Star Trek by watching Star Trek 2 and one old-school episode. Since then I've also watched Star Trek 3: Search for Spock and now 4: The Voyage Home. This story begins with the crew trying to get back to Earth after finding Spock (wow, just summarized the whole previous movie) who has not regained much of his memory but is still brimming with his characteristic personality. Emotions and humor confusing once more, classic!

This movie really gets off the ground when it gets ON the ground....landing on Planet Earth in the 80s complete with swearing at cars almost hitting them and some punk on the bus playing his music too loud. It is HILARIOUS watching Kirk and Spock banter back and forth like an old married couple (one of whom is dealing with memory loss) and you get so many funny lines! I can see why hard core fans might object to the obvious "SAVE THE WHALES" agenda put forth deviating from our original theme but I think it was a fun adventure. As if that wasn't ramming the point home far enough, when they first show up in Earth's atmosphere in the past, Spock comments that it can be verified by the "level of pollution" in the air. They have to send Chekov to try and get energy for their vessel from nuclear "wessell". Genius to send the Russian after the nukes!! He ends up injured and taken to a hospital in critical condition. Doc McCoy, Kirk, and their new friend whale biologist Dr. Jillian dress in scrubs to bust him out all the while McCoy mutters about the "Dark Ages" of technology they are all operating in!

Kirk......wow.....Play on, player. He is the MAN! He has full on swagger going and is utterly irresistible to women, even when saddled with judo-master Spock (has a strip of cloth tied around his head to cover his ear tips and with a white robe, he's the next karate kid) has a buzz kill. There's a particularly funny moment where Kirk charms their lady friend into discussing their space mission over dinner and she asks if they like Italian and Kirk says yes and Spock says no and then they switch until finally Kirk says "Yes....and so does HE" to cover. Spock never learned the art of the wing man......

This is a fun movie, a must watch for any fan or someone looking to become one. Beam me up!

Best of the Star Trek Movies

By far the best of the 6 Trek movies. This is the only one that I can watch over and over again.

Plots involving time travel, especially backwards, are almost always emotionally intriguing. Back to the Future, Peggy Sue Got Married, Final Countdown, Terminator I & II, and Somwhere In Time are all examples.

This plot requires the crew to travel back in time to bring back some Humpback whales, which have long been extinct, in order to save planet Earth from total destruction.

The crews interaction with "primitive" 20th century San Franciscons is hilarious. A winner!!

Star Trek 4

One of the more lighter Star Trek Movies. Leaves off directly after Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock. Takes the crew to 1986 San Fran, in search of Humpback Whales, to send a message to an Earth ending probe from the future. Political but yet very funny in parts. Excellent for Star Trek fans of the series.

Great price and I got what I was looking for!! THX!!! I love this movie that highlights the importance of every creature in our world!!(Star Trek crew brings a whale back to the future so it can "sing" and all the escapades they have as they interface with a humanity that doesn't know how to accept their reality of time travel)

Great Movie!

This is a great Star Trek movie though not my favorite. The humor is fun, the action is great. The storyline wasn't the greatest in my opinion, although it does give the viewer a good laugh. I think this movie would make a great addition to any Star Trek fans collection. Get it on DVD so you can watch the special features!
