Star Trek's full glory
Created: 27/03/09
This set of Star Trek movies I-VI make a nice arc, with the unoffical trilogy of II-IV anchoring the set and VI providing a nice sense of closure to them.
The reworked Director's Cut of the first film is vastly better than the original release and is much more palatable to non-fans or someone new to Star Trek. Unfortunately, Star Trek V, considered one of the worst films of the overall series, was not afforded such an opprotunity. It would have been interesting to see how a reworked version of the film would play.
While I like some of the Next Generation films, they don't mesh as well with the first six movies and I think work better separate, either as their own set or combined with some of the TV episodes for better context. The original crew movies did more to reach out to a broader audience with a grander sense of scope and stage, while the Next Generation films where too limited for the most part(probably unintentionally)to just fans of the series. That's why I think this set works better than the soon-to-be outdated Ultimate Edition 10 movie set.
There are plenty of extras and bonus features, and the box makes a good display piece. Unfortunately the Blu-Ray set is not going to include the Director's cut, meaning the inferior cut of Star Trek the Motion Picture. So, until this edition is made available on Blu-Ray, this is the Star Trek set to have. Should also go nicely with the upcoming installment of the series.

"Live long, and prosper."

As an avid, but not obsessed Star Trek fan, I decided to break down and buy this collection. I became a “Trekkie” as a child and rarely (if ever) missed an episode of the TV series. I was devastated when it was cancelled. So when the first feature film was released at the theaters, I was there. As well as those that followed in the series. But as for this collection, I was not overly impressed. I already owned each film on VHS and I expected the quality of this DVD set to be far superior. But much to my disappointment, it was not. I’m fairly sure I could have achieved the same quality had I simply copied my VHS versions to DVD with my computer. But the set does include some extras and never before seen footage that also made it difficult to resist. But now, with the introduction of Blu-ray and HD-DVD technology, I suspect there will be another, much improved release of the collection in the future. For the price though, this collection is not a bad deal. But I wish I had waited for a better quality set to come along. “Live long, and prosper.”

Star Trek - The Original Crew Movie Collection

This collection is one of the finest. It has the extended version of the Motion Picture (which I don't prefer - the HBO version is much better and shorter), and really outstanding extra features. The only small glitch is in the Search for Spock where a critical scene was omitted in favor of a brilliant performance by Scotty (which was cut from the theatrical version) Despite this, it is worth having - just keep your VHS copies.

Used DVD's - the risk/rewards
Created: 30/03/09
I love the Star Trek movies and wanted to purchase the original 6 disk set. I looked at Best Buy and the retail price was $129.00. Looked on e-bay and found a used set for $35.00. 5 our of 6 movies in excellent condition - one had a scratch in the middle of the movie/disk. I felt this purchase was still an excellent buy and will buy additional used DVD's in the future.
