Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (DVD, 2005, 2-Disc Set, Widescreen; Sensormatic)

George Lucas, Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor|Theatrical release: 1999 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

The first of three prequels to George Lucas's celebrated STAR WARS films, EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE is set some 30 years before the original STAR WARS EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE in the era of the Republic. Naboo, a peaceful planet governed by the young but wise Queen Amidala (Natalie Portman), is being threatened by the corrupt Trade Federation, puppets of an evil Sith lord and his terrifying apprentice, Darth Maul (Ray Park). Jedi knights Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor, performing an amazing vocal imitation of Alec Guinness, the older Obi-Wan) are called on to intervene in the trade disputes. Along the way, they acquire an apprentice of their own in the form of young prodigy Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), or as STAR WARS fans know him, the future Darth Vader. They also encounter Jar Jar Binks (Ahmed Best), a goofy, lizardlike creature who has been banished from his underwater world for clumsiness. When the Trade Federation launches an attack on Naboo, the queen and her allies must battle hordes of robot troopers while Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face off against the sinister Darth Maul. One of the most anticipated films of all time, THE PHANTOM MENACE sets the stage for the tumultuous events to come. Lucas fills the screen with detailed sci-fi creatures and locations, revealing the most creative and exquisite sets, costumes, and character designs to hit the screen since the original trilogy.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

First generation Star War fans often cry about Episode I not meeting their expectations...however, this is a family movie and the new generation of kids has thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It is designed to appeal to the entire family, and with this in mind I can live with the likes of Jar-Jar Binks! Kids need some funny parts after intense podraces, space battles and frightening Sith! Worth watching and worth keeping- just don't try to compare to the original trilogy. The Cons: This movie could have used some more character development and smarter dialogue. Even so- it is a great story. Obviously a must for any Star Wars fan. Darth Maul gives an epic lightsaber duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gonn Jinn. Enjoy!

Star Wars- Episode One- The Phantom Menace

This is the first film in the Second Trilogy or Beginning of the Star Wars Saga. I bought this Movie to complete my Widescreen DVD collection of the films. Excellent movie, Fantastic Graphics and State of the Art (for its time) CG animations.

Although this movie was intended to begin the Saga that is Star Wars it infact took away from the "PG-13" rating and pushed it toward the "PG" Rating in my opinion. With the introduction of the infamous and clumsy Jar Jar Binks, this movie was aimed more toward the Child Audience rather than the aging teens who saw the beginning of the George Lucas Masterpiece in the 70's.

All in all i would recommend this movie to anyone, Jar Jar Binks with his downplay of Mature themes such as Violence, Killing, Murder, and Oppression that were highly prevalent in the first or Last films, was Majorly out weighed by the Menace of the Sith, as well as the brilliant Pod Racing scenes.

A great addition to have for any true Star Wars Fan.

Worst of the Six, but still worth it!

Created: 18/02/09
The Phantom Menace is hands down the worst of the six Star Wars movies. It often seems that Lucas wanted to show what could be done with CGI, not make a good movie. Too much of Jar Jar Binks, the underwater city, and traveling through a planet.
That said, it is still enjoyable and fun! Not to mention, that kids love it. The pod race scene is great and the movie sets the stage for the rest of the films.

A worthwhile investment

This episode of the Star Wars series was great. Love the characters - all except Darth Maul - his appearance was just a little too over-the-top for us. I think his character would have been more believable if he hadn't been quite so typical-bright-red-devil colorful. Got "sold" on the Star Wars saga when hubby & I watched the "first" episode, which was actually part IV of the whole series. We'll never forget the dorky ending, but that was part of what made it so amazing to watch. Finally, a movie to be enjoyed without all the overt violence and horrible language and blatant sexuality of most movies of it's time. (Though that outfit the princess wore in eptisode V didn't hide much.) Easy to watch, good story telling, fantastic special effects, etc., etc., etc...

A worthwhile watch

I enjoyed seeing how Young Annakin Skywalker got his start. This movie answered many questions that I had.
The fight scene with Darth Maul, Obi Wan and Qui Gon-Jinn is one of my favorites!
However the acting of Natalie Portman was kind of bad.
