Almost as good, but not quite...
Created: 19/12/09
Stargate Atlantis takes the Stargate series as a spinoff, into new territory with even more weird aliens. This show is not quite as good as the previous Stargate SG-1 series, however it is worth viewing. Atlantis leans into the more metaphysical with it's alien villians called the Wraith. Noteworthy are the roles of Commander Sheperd,Rodney (the doctor), and Honolulu born actor Jason Momoa. Although the show at times seems less focused and some of the acting isn't quite as convincing as was the case with SG-1, with it's flawless seemingly realistic portrayals by Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping and the rest of the crew; it is a definite "must see" for gate fans who can't go without new episodes. Lacking new episodes of SG-1 viewers can easily take solice in this new series keeping in mind it has some pretty big shoes to fill and acting itself can be unpredictable as evidenced by Amanda Tapping's rather poor performance in the Sanctuary series despite her outstanding job in SG-1. In essence, the words "go figure" come to mind and the cast of Atlantis is hereby heartily cheered on..

Stargate: Atlantis - Season 1

I purchased this set of DVDs primarily because I own and enjoy the Stargate SG1 series, and this is a spinoff. Also I am a Richard Dean Anderson fan, and knew him to be in the pilot of this series. I also wanted to be able to understand and enjoy season 3 when it is available, because he appears in that season and I find all of these best enjoyed sequentially or some of the references make no sense...you are not "in" on the history so to speak. I quickly because just as enthralled with Atlantis as I am with Stargate SG1, even with Anderson slated to be an infrequent guest star. Any Sci-Fi fan will love either of these series, they are very rich in plot detail and easily allow you to suspend disbelief. The extra effects are superior and actual science references tend to be factual and correct...I am a Paramedic, and in particular find inaccuracies in treatments or medications to be a huge distraction, and appreciate accuracy when possible. The only draw back here, and it exists with both series, is that there are sometimes annoying glitches in the DVDs themselves, something MGM really need to correct given the prices.

This is such a great Sci-Fi tv show, It has plenty of Action & Science Fiction.
This show has some great characters in it and it has the team leader the beautiful Dr.Elizabeth Weir & the miltary leader Col. Sheppard. If you loved Stargate SG1 you'll love this one, it's a step higher in action and new adventure and there's new villians & planets and lot's of new special effects. This is a must to see, once you watch it you'll be hooked on it, just like Stargate SG-1 you'll love it. An Excellent Acquisition

Initially, I had doubts as to whether I would be interested in a spin-off series based on Stargate SG:1, which is my favorite SCI-FI television series of all time. Could a spin-off ever match the original? However, Stargate: Atlantis pulled it off.
The First Season on DVD is a wonderful value. The sound and picture quality are incredible, especially on a widescreen TV at 1080i.
If you enjoyed the show, it's a must have.

The Beginning of An Addiction For Me

As a longtime SG1 fan, I never thought I'd like what I thought of as its darker, more "civilian" cousin...until I actually sat down and watched it. SGA's clever plotlines and characters won me over in a way that most shows, especially spinoffs, take far longer than one season to do. The show does get more polished as the years progress, but that is to be expected. Unlike so many series when they're just starting out, it doesn't seem to get stuck in bad ruts and every episode takes you somewhere new. I can come back and enjoy season one's fresh adventures as our heroes step into a new galaxy for the first time.
