Starsky & Hutch (DVD, 2004, Widescreen)

Todd Phillips, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson|Theatrical release: 2004 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Coming off the heels of his hilarious college romp OLD SCHOOL, director Todd Phillips returns with a film that mocks the television cop dramas of the 1970s. Based on the crime-fighting television series of the same name, STARSKY & HUTCH follows the exploits of two west coast detectives. David Starsky (Ben Stiller) is a by-the-books officer who would like nothing more than to expose his partner Hutch's bouts of inconsistency. Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) is a far more open-minded spirit with a tendency for meandering. Added to the mix is the world's coolest informant, Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg), who wears an endless parade of stylish outfits. Starsky and Hutch's rival is the charming yet brutal Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn), a maniacal drug lord with an absurd moustache who is prone to dramatic outbursts. Phillips uses freeze frames and slow-motion to up the comic ante, while Stiller and Wilson prove that they are a truly compatible duo, and, finally, Will Ferrell makes yet another scene-stealing cameo--all factors that ensure a long shelf life for this raucous spoof.

Starsky & Hutch movie

Created: 01/08/08
I was a HUGE fan of the original series and own all the dvds. I knew the movie would not be exactly the same as the show, but this was completely nothing like the series! This was the worst remake of all the remakes done of 70's shows! A tribute is supposed to honor the show it is paying homage to. This movie completely mocked it. If you watched the tv series, the original actors had a very unique chemistry that carried over into the show which was part of its appeal. Ben and Owen had none of that. Also, the characterizations were completely off. In this film, they portray Starsky as stupid and Hutch as a man barely on this side of legal. That is SO wrong. The original also was a drama with comedic moments - not a "comedy" like this film. The ONLY highlight of this mess was the end where the original series actors (Paul Michael Glaser & David Soul) made an all too short cameo appearance.

Snoop Dogg was good at his portrayal of Huggy Bear. Although again, I am partial to the original Huggy Bear of the series.

Thank goodness I never spent my money seeing this in the theatre. I saw it when a friend brought the dvd by to watch. I do own it, as it was given to me as a Christmas gift. The ONLY reason I have kept it is because of the cameos of Paul and David. Otherwise, I would have gotten rid of it a long time ago. Honestly, I would never have wasted my hard earned money purchasing it for myself.

If Warner Brothers was smart, they would remake this film again staying true to the original premise of the series and characters and bring back Paul and David to reprise their tv roles.

True S&H fans will be disappointed with this remake.

Nothing Like the TV Series…

Created: 10/08/07
After watching it for the first time, I did not like it very much. Being a HUGE fan of the TV show, I really did not like what was done with the characters.

The characteristics of Starsky, Hutch & Huggy are totally off base. If you’ve never seen the TV show, watching this movie will not motivate you to do so; which is a shame, because the TV show is SO much better.

The movie was suppose to be about how Starsky & Hutch first met, albeit their friendship starts out on shaky ground. That’s all well and good, but after you meet the person that ends up being your best friend, your personalities won’t totally change from the Ben Stiller / Owen Wilson version to the Paul Michael Glaser / David Soul version. As an example, the Batman prequel, “Batman Begins” has a much better transition to the Michael Keaton era films.

Starsky wasn’t afraid of his car, nor was he wishy-washy and unsure of himself. He handled the car with ease and was confident and aggressive when necessary.

Hutch wasn’t the bad cop-on-the-take, screw-up. He was the health conscious, level-headed, keep-things-calm side of the duo.

Huggy had more style and finesse than what is portrayed by the flashy, pimped-out version in the movie.

Thankfully, the car is as cool as ever and a joy to watch.

Once I was able to set aside my loyalty and comparison to the TV show and watch the movie solely on its merits alone, it wasn’t that horribly bad. There are many funny scenes that are enjoyable, and the car stunts are great.

During the credits at the end of the movie, there is one blooper scene with Snoop Dogg and the iguana that is pretty funny, and if you love the car, there is the blooper during the scene when Hutch sees the car for the first time that will make you just cringe…

All-in-all, the actors did a good job with a good story line, and the scene with the cameo appearances of Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul is enjoyable.

As I watched the movie for the second and third time, it began to grow on me. I really enjoyed the Director’s Cut feature where Todd Phillips takes you through the entire film and explains a lot about the scenes, what was done to them, from adding the computer generated subway at the beginning of the film to telling some behind-the-scenes stories. The story about Snoop Dogg’s 1976 Lincoln is pretty interesting.

I understand the concept and the point of the movie, but my initial dislike was hard to suppress.

I would love to see a new Starsky & Hutch movie with Paul and David back in action!!

Old TV Shows are worth revisiting

Created: 07/03/08
I wasn't a big fan of the old TV series (I watched them when I was a kid!) I was more interested in BJ and the Bear and the Dukes of Hazzard. I remembered the car - like the Dukes. However, I wasn't your average kid and did pay attention. I later became a cop - and those childhood dreams were fueled by alot of the police shows.

This movie has made big improvements to the original series and played well with the old case. Snoop Dog as "Huggy Bear" was hiliarious! You could understand Snoop and he played the part very well. You were looking for Huggy to make his appearance in the movie and wished that he played a bigger roll.

The plot was enteraining. If you expected a good murder mystery or drama, you are looking at the wrong movie. It is light hearted humor and good for laughs. If you are a product of the 70's (even as a child) you will flash back and laugh aloud at the silly little things in this movie. Thank you for taking me back. It was fun and I am glad it was only a visit.

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson work GREAT together. Ever since "Something About Mary" there has been a good partnership with these too.

Too bad the they trashed a couple of cars in this movie. I want one once again.

It is worth watching and worth purchasing for your collection if you are a fan. I will always be a fan and would watch another Stiller / Owen version of Starsky and Hutch.

Starsky and Hutch

Another Great Wilson/Stiller/Vaughn/Ferrell Film

I wasn't that excited about Starsky and Hutch, and after watching it the first time I didn't really like it.

I don't know what changed but after seeing it a few times on the Movie Channel, Starsky and Hutch started to grow on me.

This movie is hilarious... it just took me a couple of views to realize it.

Wilson, Stiller, Vaughn, and Ferrell are perfect, and the laughs keep coming throughout the entire film. Snoop Dogg is a great addition to this film as a high-level snitch.

Final Verdict:

4/5

Rent or Buy?: After a few views opened my eyes I rushed out and picked up a copy of this great comedy. This movie belongs in any comedy fans DVD collection.
