Step Up 2 the Streets (DVD, 2008, Dance Off Edition)

Jon M. Chu, Briana Evigan, Robert Hoffman|Theatrical release: 2008 | Rating: PG-13 (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Jon Chu directs this feel-good sequel about pursuing what you love and finding yourself along the way. Andie (Briana Evigan, daughter of actor Greg Evigan) is a tough Baltimore teen who grew up dancing and is now part of the 410, the hottest dance crew in the city and reigning champions of the Streets, an underground dance competition. Unable to control Andie's rebellious ways, her guardian, Sarah (Sonja Sohn), has decided to send her to Texas to live with her aunt. But Andie has one last chance to stay with her crew in her beloved Baltimore: the Maryland School of the Arts (MSA). Unfortunately, maintaining her studies at MSA means less time with the 410. To make matters worse, Andie is having a hard time fitting in at her new high school, where tradition is revered and being outside the box is frowned upon. Luckily, she has a partner in crime in classmate Chase Collins (Robert Hoffman), whose stuffy brother, Blake (Will Kemp), is the school's director and a constant thorn in his younger brother's side. When the 410 boots Andie out, she and Chase find their own crew of overlooked MSA dancers and take it all the way to the Streets. The real star of STEP UP 2: THE STREETS is the amazing dancing and there's plenty of it. From the opening scene in a Baltimore subway to the playground to studio rehearsals to the Streets, these kids give it everything they've got. Channing Tatum briefly reprises his role as Tyler Gage, who knows Andie from the neighborhood. All of the MSA and 410 dancers are exceedingly talented, but Mari Koda's few lines as Jenny Kido are scene-stealers.

"Chu shoots the movie every which way, heavy on the extreme telephoto imagery...he clearly loves his performers....[With] a choice soundtrack, spiced by the likes of Missy Elliott's 'Shake Your Pom Pom'..."
Los Angeles Times - Los Angeles Times Critic (02/14/2008)

"In a dance-off with the original, STEP UP 2 wins for that rain-soaked street routine alone." -- Grade: B+

I love this movie it was better the second time around. My favorite movie in the world. I'm a black female who has been dancing sense I was able to walk. And Anyone who is a true dancer likemyself would really like this movie. Greay dancers love to sit back and watch another great dancer give it all they got. With step up 1 & 2 that is what they did. No matter what color you are we all can dance to the beat of one drum and both movies show just that time and time again.

Step Up 2 the Streets

Everything about this film FAR exceeds the first in the series. First of all, the actors are way more talented, in both their dancing and acting skills. Where Channig Tatum was practically robotic in the original, Rob Hoffman is charming and funny. Brianna also adds a good element, because where Nora was the goody two shoes, Brianna's more tough, and fights for what she wants. And the dance sequences will absolutely blow you away. Rather than looking overly rehearsed, the moves come across as smooth and amazing. The plot as a whole seems to be less cliche-y as well.

I think that this is a movie that anyone can enjoy, but it seems that people are split on which is better. Some think the first is better, while others prefer this newer, more hip version. Either way, this movie is DEFINITELY worth checking out!

Stellar Dancing

I rate this movie as excellent mostly because of the dancing. There was an easily followable plot, but the story itself wasn't as strong as the first movie. The dancing on the other hand blows the first Step Up out of the water! There are a ton more dances in this movie and the choreography is just phenomenal. The final dance is one that you will want to watch over and over and over.
This is the kind of sequel where it doesn't matter that there are new characters. In fact, new characters are neccessary. However, diehard Step Up fans can be appeased knowing that Channing Tatum does make an appearance at the beginning of the film.
