Synopsis
The Stranger (1989, Reissue) is a compelling read by famed existentialist philosopher Albert Camus. This Albert Camus paperback, first published in 1946, narrates the disturbing tale of a disenchanted, troubled, and ostensibly amoral, young man. The basic plot of this existentialist novel revolves around Meursault, an Algerian youth who inexplicably kills a man. This Albert Camus paperback holds a certain sway in the literary world, and has gone on to become one of the most widely read novels. With themes like alienation, the fear of anonymity, and spiritual doubt, this existentialist novel bustles with philosophical undertones. Absurdist Albert Camus, the author of The Stranger (1989, Reissue), won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957.

Publisher's Note
An ordinary man is unwittingly caught up in a senseless murder in Algeria

Through the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach, Camus explored what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd." First published in 1946; now in a new translation by Matthew Ward.

Industry Reviews
"Story--the man who refuses to justify himself. Other people prefer their idea of him. He dies, alone in his awareness of what he really is."
Albert Camus

"From its famous first sentence, 'Mother died today,' to its amazing finale, this short novel is suffused throughout by the harsh glare of the Algerian summer."
Washington Post Book World - Michael Dirda (08/20/1995)

Existentialism at it's most basic

Created: 07/01/10
It was not until I read this work that I was able to understand the plight ofthe existentialist. In this novel Camus presents a man we absolutely have no way of relating with. His experiences are not unique but his handlng of these situations are completely unique however as the story develops we see him develop into a person we can understand, and we begin to understand the position of the existentialist. The final lines of the text are telling statements that show just how far he changed through he course of he novel.

Don't give up on it- it'll frustrate you but it's definitely worth it.

Seriously one of the most thought-provoking novels I've ever read. It'll give you a headache trying to make sense of it, rationalize it, and that's the point. Before reading this, you must MUST read Camus's The Myth of Sisyphus. It's only about a page or 2 long and you'll need to read it to be able to approach this book. I really recommend it.

Excellent book. Needed it for English class and I almost have it finished. Albert Camus is a very good author, very intriguing with what he writes.

Although this book is short, it packs a punch. If you have any interest in different philosophies or thinking in new ways, this book is definitely required reading. It is the best existential piece of writing out there...
