Movie synopsis

For his film debut, director Brian Bertino has crafted a fantastically creepy horror flick based on the very simple premise of strangers who come knocking late at night. Kristen (Liv Tyler) and James (Scott Speedman) have arrived at a secluded vacation home in the woods after attending a friend's wedding. It's four in the morning, and they're both tearful and emotionally exhausted after a disagreement about their relationship. As they awkwardly try to navigate the long night together, they are distracted by the sound of a heavy knock at the door. They open it to find a dazed young woman hidden in the shadows. Assuming she is lost, James sends her away, but Kristen is disturbed by the late-night visit. When James leaves to go on a drive and pick up some cigarettes, Kristen is left alone, and we watch her move through the huge house in a painfully eerie silence, all the while knowing that she is being watched. By the time James returns, Kristen is in hysterics, and together they must face the terrifying fact that they are indeed in grave danger. Both Tyler and Speedman give excellent, understated performances that lend the film a truly frightening edge of realism. The story's simplicity is a refreshing change from over-the-top torture films like SAW, and the violence in the film is minimal, and much of it off camera. THE STRANGERS also lacks any big-budget special effects. You won't find any CGI creatures or armies of zombies. The only monsters depicted here are the very real human kind, which is what leaves you thoroughly spooked and shaken, and ready to push a chair against your own front door.

*~*~ Not All Its Cracked Up To Be ~*~*

We would rate The Strangers 4 out of 10. It is a very slow film(very drawn out), especially at the beginning. It will keep you in suspense and possibly on the edge of your seat, but it takes awhile for any real action to kick in and then when it does, its not really all that.
It is a quality film, however, it seems low budget as Liv Tyler is pretty much the only acting cast throughout the film(as the other cast members play only short roles throughout the film - they come and go), and all of the movie takes place at one secluded location.

Like we said, it will keep your attention, and possibly make you jump, but its not all it is cracked up to be.

Absolutely Chilling

Created: 22/10/08
The movie The Strangers is inspired by true events. The beginning of the movie is actually the end of the movie, then they recap. Even though you have already figured out the fates of the couple, it's an intriguing intro and you're hooked.
Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler play Kristen and James, a couple who has just returned to a remote summer home, from a friends wedding. The events unfold fairly quickly, the story takes place all in one evening. Absolutely frightening in a very real way.

I think the only big disappointment to me was that there are no subtitles, and I always keep the subtitles on to catch the whispers and background noise.
This movie reminded me a lot of Funny Games(which came out on DVD earlier this year),because the people are the monsters. Seemingly normal and therein lies the terror!

Not much in the way of bonus features, but if you like suspense thrillers you won't be disappointed.

The Strangers

I liked this movie alot. It was so scary. I had to take the time during the movie and check all the doors and windows and make sure they were locked. Imagine, it's late at night, it's dark outside in the middle of nowhere and you're alone at someone elses house waiting for your friend to return. All of a sudden theres a pounding on the door and it continues. Sounds like a madman out there. You don't trust what might happen if you open that door. By now you know those people out there is trying to get to you. But this is just the beginning of the horror yet to come. This movie got from spooky to frightening. The quiet tall man out there wears such a simple canvas mask and yet it's so creepy. The demanding pounding on the door continues. You want a good scare? Try watching this movie alone in a cabin on a cold windy October night.

Elements of Terror Not Scary Enough For Me Yet Good!

Created: 27/09/09
The billing for this R-Rated film was that it might (May) prevent you from ever going home again! It really only put me to sleep faster knowing what was going to happen and have to sit through a bunch of romantic (smoochy smoochy) stuff just to get to the main film plot. It was really interesting at the end when it became daylight again. The sleepiness usually is a sign of poor situational decisions that are supposed to build on any initial tensions, but the editing was a tad bit off, although the ending was found by me to be a wee bit creepy.

Here is a ****************************** Spoiler ************************************!
I also didn't like it that the dude's friend comes in and gets blown away by the other friend's dude. It really made me angry that they would be so stupid after being so terrified to be so careless.

I'll give this one 3/5 for good acting on the part of Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman.

Bone Chilling in a Whole New Way

Created: 18/06/09
This movie is unique and 5 star in my book. You will not find scary monsters, bloody injuries, or scray zombies in this film. This film focuses more on the most dangerous monster of all- the silent psychotic human, and what they are capable of. It is chilling but not gory or sickening. This is a great party movie and will make you and all who watch it be especially weary of strangers from now on. So lock your doors, get you night light ready, and watch this must see.
