Strauss Family: 4 Volume Gift Boxed Set (DVD, 2008, 2-Disc Set)

I saw this series when it originally aired on television in the 70's. It is as fresh and appealing now as it was then. The acting is superb, the music wonderful (played by the London Symphony Orchestra). This is the story of the Strauss family - Johann Sr. and his sons, Johann Jr. (the most famous of the clan)and his brothers Josef and Edi. You don't have to be a fan of the music to love this series, although the music provides the background for the story of the times. Stuart Wilson play the younger Strauss - those who recognize him from his work in the Mask of Zorro as Don Montero will relish his portrayal of the complex and fascinating composer. The supporting cast is strong, with many familiar names, including a very young Jane Seymour, who portrays Josef's wife. Sit back and enjoy as you are taken back into another time, when music and dance halls were the social scene. You won't be disappointed by this series.

For music or history lovers, this was an important film series following the Strausses, father and son. It uses sets, rather than natural scenery, which may make it unappealing to some, but the arrogance of the characters shines through.

This is a beautifully told saga of a remarkable family. The music is awesome.
This series was the reason I traveled to Stadtpark,Vienna and stood before the famous statue of Strauss.

I have been wanting this Strauss DVD for years. The price was finally right. It is good for any one who is interested in classical music and there composers.

The sound for this boxed set was poor or inconsistent. Indistinct lines were a distraction. The story was terrific.
