Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
Created: 07/12/09
Though it's unfortunate that Capcom hasn't shown much production value by omitting retrospective features and other historical content, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology still plays great despite its age and the number of times we've seen these games before. Street Fighter Alpha 3 is still one of the best fighters of the last 10 years and the other titles in the set are no slouch either. I'm also a big fan of all the extra options and customizable bonuses that Capcom has thrown in for uber-fans and the harder default difficulty brings a new challenge after all these years. This is really, really good stuff... it's just really, really old too.
Presentation
HDD support is nice but you'll still need the disc to run the game and the load improvements are minimal. The boring menus and lack of extra content that's typical for compilations of this type hurts.
Graphics
Aged past its prime, the visuals aren't groundbreaking but they're undoubtedly stylish. Expect interlacing like crazy for special moves (especially on HD sets), but at least there isn't any slowdown.
Sound
Memorable tracks are mixed with forgettable ones across multiple games and the tinny sound effects and voices don't hold up well with time.
Gameplay
A five-game assortment that includes one of the best fighters around, three very good ones, and a novelty are bolstered by some cool customization options. Just make sure to use a stick.
Lasting Appeal
There are a number of possible match-ups here spread out across five games, but nothing particularly compelling to keep us coming back that we haven't seen before.

I can’t stress enough that in order to truly enjoy this game is with an 8 button arcade controller and with at least one other person.

The best of Street Fighter Alpha
Created: 09/10/09
There's not much to say other than this is a collection of the Street Fighter Alpha games in one disc for the PS2. The only big difference being that on the original Street Alpha game you get Survival and Dramatic Battle mode. The Dramatic Battle on the main menu differs from the one in the original arcade game, in which player can select any pair of characters and face against a series of four computer-controlled opponents (Adon, Sagat, M. Bison and Akuma), not just Ryu and Ken against Bison. Furthermore, the player can turn on an option to allow Super Cancels; canceling a special move into a Super Combo.
So all-in-all you get a pretty great deal here. A collection of fantastic fighters, fast-paced, and some of the best to hit the genre.

Street Fighter Alpha Anthology isn't the same exact collection of games as the Anniversary Collection released a while back but it is the definitive collection for fans of the Alpha series of Street Fighter, an equally impressive fighting series produced by Capcom as well. Capcom built upon what they did with with the equally impressive Darkstalkers/Vampire series and it reflects in Alpha, with a similar art style and fighting engine. In all you get 5 titles, Alpha 1, 2, 2 Gold, 3 and Super Gem Fighters Mini Mix (Pocket Fighter). There are also hidden versions to unlock of the games.
My only problem with the collection is the general lack of extras, which feel relatively light in this game. If you love 2D fighting titles this isn't a bad deal, Alpha 3 alone was an impressive title back then and still is to some today.
