Product description

Synopsis
In this second installment of the His Dark Materials trilogy, Lyra and her friend Will travel to a strange, tropical otherworld known as Cittagazze, a place devoid of adults, where children run wild. As Lyra and Will's lives become more and more entwined, Lyra's alethiometer commands her to find Will's father, and the search brings her and Will closer to the Subtle Knife, a magical tool that cuts windows between worlds. Inspired by John Milton's PARADISE LOST, this trilogy begins with THE GOLDEN COMPASS and concludes with THE AMBER SPYGLASS.

Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman-His Dark Materials #2

Created: 23/01/08
In this 2nd installment of His Dark Materials Trilogy, Lyra has passed through the portal in the sky created by her father. As the boundaries between worlds begin to dissolve, Lyra and her daemon help Will Parry in his search for his father and for a powerful, magical knife. This book is just as fast moving and entralling as the 1st was (Golden Compass). This is as rich and complex of a fantasy novel that any adult reader could wish for. On the the 3rd book!

good book

Created: 20/03/06
Subtle Knife, the second Dark Materials book, is very good. The descriptions are vivid, and I trusted the character Will Parry even more than Lyra when I met her in book one. The book is long, and sometimes I felt impatient for the story to continue as characters would go back and tell people what the reader already found out from somebody else telling them, but the ideas are drawn together in a really remarkable way, and the impatience I felt was because I didn't want to wait to find out what happened.
The subject is really scary to think about -- esp. the strained relationships between certain adults and children. This is a book I would have swallowed whole when I was younger, but it might have given me some scary dreams. Many adults might say this is not a children's book -- or at least, this is a book for mature, if not older, children. I hope you will enjoy the series as much as I have. Thanks!

Fascinating and never dull

I fell in love with Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series since the moment I started reading it. They contain a fabulous mix of science fiction, magic, politics, religion, and the difference between adults and children that is hard to find. He has an uncanny ability to use complex subjects in a breathtaking story that you just can't put down. Definitely great reading for a vast audience.

This is the second book in the three part series that starts with "The Golden Compass." The first book ended so shockingly, that you'll want to read this one to help figure out more of the plot. Lyra and Pan meets up with Will and together they search for her dad. The knife has some interesting abilities. This is not a book I would recommend to elementary children because of the violence.

As you continue your journey with lyra and her demon as well as her new friend through new worlds, you will be smitten with the story as much as you were with the Golden Compass. I loved this book and anyone who loved the Golden Compass will too.
