Led by Mark Knopfler, whose deadpan vocal style and stunning guitar technique characterize the band's sound, Dire Straits burst on the scene in 1978 with "Sultans of Swing." This VERY BEST OF begins there (even amid the ensemble's later hits, the lead-off track's clean shuffle rhythm and minor-key melody still dazzles) and continues all the way to cuts from the group's 1991 release, ON EVERY STREET, and their 1993 live outing, ON THE NIGHT.The Dylan-esque narrative of "Romeo and Juliet," from MAKING MOVIES, is one of the early highlights here. At the collection's heart are the tracks from the 1985 blockbuster BROTHERS IN ARMS, including the lamenting "So Far Away," bopping "Walk of Life," and the irrepressible "Money for Nothing." Beyond showcasing Knopfler's excellent songwriting, this album is graced by his light, technically precise guitar technique (he finger-picks all of his electric leads). More comprehensive than their previous greatest-hits package, MONEY FOR NOTHING, SULTANS OF SWING is an excellent introduction to Dire Straits.

Editorial Reviews
...Dire Straits' best songs seem as singular today as when they first appeared at the supremely unlikely peak of '70s British punk....on the strongest numbers--the courtly `Romeo & Juliet' or graceful `Tunnel Of Love'--Knopfler helps keep the faded '60s notion of the romantic guitar hero alive. - Rating: B+

Nice,but inessential

This is a good snapshot of Dire Staits, but probably should have been expanded to include two discs as it omits many of their great songs. This was the second attempt at a Dire Straits collection. The first, titled "Money For Nothing," was just as skimpy. The third and most recent collection unfortunately includes solo material from Mark Knopfler. If you're a casual fan and are only familiar with Dire Straits from a couple of their songs, then this collection is okay, but I really recommend owning all of their albums for all of the great songs not included on any of their best-ofs.

Hands down this is the best sounding HDCD I own next to Chaka Khan. This is very close to the SACD format as far as sound quality. Money for nothing sounds fantastic. the gutar riffs at the beginning are very detailed. Over all the sound quality is excellent, it's a album you can sit back and listen to the whole way through. Mostly because it's only 9 tracks to boot. They are deserving of a 2 disc-set, which I haven't seen yet. For a couple of bucks, this a a very good bargain. Plus if you have a HDCD player & receiver, you get very good sound quality. I gave it 5 stars based on the sound quality and attention to detail, but wish it had more tracks.

Sultans of Swing- very good sample!!!

Mark Knopfer is one of the best guitarists on the planet-hands down. Dire Straits is a legendary band-pretty much because of Mark and his fingerpicking style. This is really a very good sample without having to purchase all the cds.
