Van Eaton, Otis Jett (drums); The Roses (background vocals).Recorded at the Sun Studio, Memphis, Tennessee in the 1950s. Includes liner notes by Jimmy Guterman.Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Ken Perry (K-Disc).Rhino's single-disc THE SUN YEARS is less exhaustive than the multi-volume European reissues which contain every scrap of tape Orbison ever recorded during his ill-fated tenure at Sam Phillips' Sun Records, but it sounds terrific and it's a better choice by far for the casual fan. Orbison never quite fit in Phillips' rockabilly operation, and his one hit for Sun, the endearingly silly "Ooby Dooby," sounds almost like the west Texan singer's embarrassed to be singing it. That trademark vibrato is almost in place, but he doesn't get to use it much on this frisky material. The results are fascinating for Orbison fans, but most rockabilly cats agree that Orbison made the right decision when he started writing and recording those lush bolero-like ballads for Nashville's Monument Records. Nonetheless, there's some terrific material here, most notably "Claudette," later a hit for the Everly Brothers.
Editorial Reviews3 stars out of 5 - ...[shows] him developing that signature keening cry....An endearing and sorely missed talent, ballads were truly his forte.Q (19991001)eBay Product ID: EPID3124856
