Although Satriani (a teacher to such famous students as Steve Vai and Metallica's Kirk Hammett) began getting recognition following his solo debut, NOT OF THIS EARTH, it was this subsequent record that truly sent the guitarist's career into the stratosphere. With the majority of the album performed by Satch himself (including bass, keyboard, and most drum parts), this is an outing that prominently displays his overall musical talent, while keeping the focus on his amazingly deft, blistering leads. The New York-born guitarist also impresses with his eclectic array of styles, ranging from the fierce hard rock of the title track to the delicate pop of "Always with Me, Always with You" to the bold blues of "Satch Boogie." For those curious about the revered shredder, this is a great introduction, and, for aspiring heavy-metal/hard-rock guitarists, SURFING WITH THE ALIEN is absolutely essential.

One giant leap for Joe!

Created: 12/09/07
This is the album that established Joe Satriani as one of the modern-day guitar gods, and deservedly so! This is a masterpiece of writing and skill. "Surfing With the Alien" starts it off and establishes Joe's early tone that was copied by so many. This one also starts a series of songs related to the Marvel superhero Silver Surfer (this album cover; "Back to Shalla-Bal" on the album "Flying in a Blue Dream" and "The Power Cosmic 2000, parts 1&2 on "Engines of Creation") "Satch Boogie" is an extremely rockin' tune that is his trademark. Still jaw-dropping after all this time. "Always With You, Always With Me" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and is one of the songs that got him noticed by mainstream audiences (it is often played during figure skating routines, along with another song by Joe, "All Alone") "Circles" is a song that was probably a source of inspiration for many alternative and punk bands simply for the fact that it starts out nice and soft, then goes nuclear, then back to nice and soft. Plus, "Crushing Day" is one of the most all-around perfect songs I've ever heard. As a whole, this is a must-definitely-own for any fan of the guitar. Well deserving of the perfect score.

Great title, very original!

Created: 06/04/10
You see this guitar work is phenomenal, no chicken foot. There is a reason why excellent guitarists like this loose their hair. Peter Frampton, Joe Satriani, etc. because they go after new adventures instead of sticking with the original formula. What happened to rock & roll? Or should I say do you know how far a rockcanroll? It's because people started body surfin instead of getting into the music. Grunge brought it all downhill causing suicides and pretty girls getting tattoos above their asses. Yeah, it's all ass backwards. I'm not mad, it just gives original artists like myself an avenue for fame & fortune while all the rest who supposedly we're the best stick guns to their heads & fire!

Alien surfing

Created: 04/12/09
I bought this CD to continue my collection of Satriani CDs.
This I believe is one of his earliest CDs. This music is different from other music I've heard. His guitar playing is so unusual compared to other guitarists. I love the playing. I have no idea what he's doing. I don't play guitar but it sounds like he's playing alot faster than most guitarists I'm familiar with. The sounds that he gets out of his guitar are amazing.
That's why I started to buy his CDs. And Steve Vai and Eric Johnson as well.

Joe Satriani - The Man Knows The Strings - EXCELLENT **

Created: 21/07/08
Joe knows his way around the guitar. I had a copy of "Surfing With The Alien" on cassette somewhere yet to be found and could not pass up buying this copy on ebay. He has played with various well known bands unleashing his great talents and provocative style in the rock world. To hear his artistic manipulation of the singing axe is unprecedent and appealing to the most acute audio pallet.
