Sweet Charity (DVD, 2003)

"Sweet Charity" is by now an antique, since the VHS came out in 1968. Charity Hope Valentine (Shirley MacLaine), delivers one of her finest musical performances ever. She's a dance hall hostess who dreams of a better life as a dental technician and marriage outside of the New York dance hall.

Choreographer turned Director, Bob Fosse, blazes a new path in the film's extravagantly choreographed song and dance routines: including "If My Friends Could See Me Now," (MacLaine) "Big Spender," (MacLaine and Chita Rivera,) and "Rhythm of Life." (Sammy Davis, Jr.). To name but a few.

Rich and undeserving a man (Ricardo Montalban) is but one of those opportunistic kinds that Charity trusts and shouldn't. Floating on thin air with a naive lust that makes her easy prey for men who use her and leave her waiting at the altar, Charity's hopes for a better life are dashed.

The musical runs 2 and half hours and is rated G. A delightful Neil Simon Broadway hit that is classic.

I seemed to have missed this one in the theaters so I was glad to be able to watch in on dvd. OK, so the production values are not what we are used to these days, but Bob Fosse's direction and choreography more than make up for that. The cast is headlined by Shirley McClain, Fernando Llamas, Sammy Davis Jr. and Rita Moreno. Need I say more? But what made this movie truly memorable were the old familiar songs like "Big Spender", "Rhythm of Life" and "If My Friends Could See Me Now" than any Broadway buff should know and love. If you haven't seen this musical, then this dvd is worth the investment. And even if you've already seen it, I say this is worth adding to your collection!

Wanted this DVD to enhance our collection of stage shows/movies. Our local Music Theatre did "Sweet Charity", and we wanted the DVD, to share with others when we are talking of the stage musical.

This is a fav of mine and I'm so glad to finally have it in my collection. Fosse's dance scenes are unforgetable. My mom and I used to watch this to "learn the moves". :)

I have always love this movie. It good that old movie return to life in dvd. An good pleasant movie with an fabulous casting.
