Excellent scripts and fine characterization

Always loved Taggart, a Glasgow detective who tries his very best to remain unloved, as he defies his superiors and uses native cunning to solve some of that Scottish city's more heinous crimes. Where better to start than at the beginning, although be warned that these early shows are not very sophisticated on the set level but they are all the more striking for that.
Glasgow was a very tough place in days gone by, and Taggart grew up in its streets learning the rough and tumble the hard way (can it be learned in any other?). So he has a mean streak which he has no difficulty showing to either junior officers or superiors. Yet underneath, as the series also brings out, there is also an old softy waiting to calm the nerves of those in distress.
It's a long-running series so if you get hooked, watch out! There's plenty more to come.
