Movie synopsis

Based on the book by Kate Dicamillo, this animated film is set in the magical kingdom of Dor. Once an enchanted place, Dor has since been put under a dark grey spell. But with the birth of a small mouse named Despereaux, hope is restored to all the land, and the real adventures begin., Universal Pictures crafts a whimsical tale of courage using some truly stunning CGI animation in THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX. Based on the award-winning book of the same name, the film features some all-star voice work from the likes of Sigourney Weaver, Dustin Hoffman, and Matthew Broderick. The story begins in the European city of Dor, a picturesque town know for its amazing soup. When the soup-obsessed rat Roscuro (Hoffman) accidentally brings about a tragedy in the royal kingdom, the Dor King falls into mourning, both soup and rats are banned, and the skies turn to gray. Roscuro soon finds himself living in the dank darkness of a place called Rat World. Nearby, in Mouse World, we finally meet our hero, Despereaux (Broderick). Despereaux is an unusually small mouse with some rather over-sized dreams. Despite his small stature, he longs to live a bold and exciting life, and he chafes at the dictums of Mouse World--where mice are taught to live quietly in fear. When Despereaux goes so far as to befriend the human Princess Pea (Emma Watson), he is booted from Mouse World down into the miseries of Rat World. There he meets Roscuro, and together the two decide to carry out their own individual quests and right what has been wronged. While Roscuro soon finds himself going astray, Despereaux sticks to his guns--or rather, his sewing-needle sword--and he fights to bring joy and freedom back to the city of Dor.The film remains pretty faithful to the book, although it does trim down some of the quirkier aspects of the novel. Yet the story is still refreshingly dark in places, and is reminiscent of such classic tales as THE SECRET OF NIMH and WATERSHIP DOWN--smart cartoons that were always about much more than mere cuddly talking animals.

Set to become a TRUE classic fairy tale & family film!

Created: 27/09/10
The story, the acting, the voice work, the visuals, the directing... shall I go on?
This "family" film is by far much, much more than just a "family" film. This is cinematic arts, this is animated classics and THIS is storytelling at it's most endearing best!
I praise the ratings board for letting it be G and not PG although some elements I would have thought would lead it to be PG, such as using "the lord's name in vein" (among a few other small topics I dare not mention for fear of giving even the slightest spoiler). It is certainly a strong G movie but that in NO way is a degrader. This movie was not made to pander to snot-nosed children's basic desires to be entertained or to their parent's desire to hypnotize their child for 90 minutes.
No, THIS film, entertains ALL ages, ALL people.
Put it this way...
I am 30, male, tattoos (including one on my NECK), ride motorcycles, was a US Marine for 5 years and while I do not consider myself an "alpha" male... I do consider myself sufficiently masculine. So, with that I say, this film was AMAZING!
It was touching, it carried with it many great messages and it presents the ideals of more honorable times. There is nothing in this film that happens "just to move the plot along". This film richly delves into the weaving of characters together into one story that shows all the characters crossing paths at various points until finally they all find resolutions of one sort or another to their own personal struggles. The film doesn't sugar coat everything nor does it overly darken the journeys either. Ideas are abundant in the film too. Ideas like knights, honor, heroes of duty and purpose. All of which come from a brave, idyllic little...mouse. It is the perfect story of big things from even the smallest of people.
This movie is one everyone with a heart and a soul will find themselves embracing on, not just an entertainment level but, an emotional one as well.
In conclusion, I HIGHLY recommend this movie in ANYONE's collection.

Last thing! This film does NOT go the route of throwing in irritating or embarrassing musical numbers (as a guy I find most animated movie musical numbers rather "frilly"). This is a film disguised as a children's cartoon. This is a classic fairytale disguised as a kid's movie.

An excellent quality, enjoyable film!

A Tale of Despereaux is a movie I enjoyed thoroughly when it came out in the theaters, and I must say I enjoy owning it just as much. It lends itself very well to the Blu-Ray format, being originally mastered directly from animation to disc. The quality is superb, and while much of the bonus content is somewhat silly, the film itself is well worth the time to watch.

My only gripe with the Blu-Ray disc is that they did not include any of the original theatrical trailers, something I enjoy having with any movie I own. All in all, a most enjoyable, family friendly movie, and a great addition to my movie collection.

I always been enjoyed buying staff in E-Bay, I find the prices cheap and I love the passion of bid, One of the greatest thing is the way like you find almost everything and you do not have to travel far away to find the things that you are looking for, at the same time you save time and money, I decide to buy this movie because I love it and I check in the Internet in different stores but in e-bay the price was right. My appreciation to you because I received the product in less time than I was predicted.

My kids love this movie, it is one that even the 3 year old sits through. They call it the mouse with the big ears movie. It isn't just great for the kids, it is enjoyable for the whole family. Two thumbs up!
