Do You Ungawa ???
Created: 03/07/08
So.... What exactly is 'Ungawa' ??
This word was Tarzan's favorite word in the six films that Johnny Weissmuller starred in.
The word actually was a verb in most cases. To go, to do, go, go now, come here, do it, etc etc...
While waiting for Season 3 of 'The West Wing' to come in, I rented 'The Tarzan Collection' for Tina and myself to view.
She originally thought what the heck is he renting this for... but I explained I had only see a few scenes from the movies.
Additionally we just picked up a Tarzan collection that was listed last week, so the Tarzan DVD set jumped out at me at rental store!
THE TARZAN COLLECTION CONTAINS:
TARZAN THE APE MAN - 1932 - I give this a 8.5 score. Sensual and violent for 1932, but this was a pre-code film.
TARZAN AND HIS MATE - 1834 - I scored it a 9.0 it still holds up for viewing today.
TARZAN ESCAPES - 1936 - Not as good, when viewing this right after the other two films, you'll see the same film footage that was shown in the other films. Scored it 7.0
TARZAN FINDS A SON - 1939 - The origin of 'Boy' was pretty darn good! 8.0
TARZAN AND THE SECRET TREASURE - 1941 - The films are starting to feel 'formulaic' in manner, and you can see the same footage when the rhinos attack and the elephants save Tarzan. 7.0 Score.
TARZAN’S NEW YORK ADVENTURE - 1942 - The Sixth and LAST Tarzan feature film with Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. Scored 9.0.
I enjoyed this DVD set, and Tina was amused by several of the scenes in these films. All in all she enjoyed watching the set more than she thought she would have!
So... We really do watch more than just Sci-Fi and Comic Book Movies!

THE TARZAN COLLECTION starring Johnny Weismuller
Created: 04/07/08
For anyone who remembers Saturday afternoons long ago watching the death-defyi g brilliance of Olympic Champion Johnny Weismuller as TARZAN of THE APES, THIS volume is the DEFINITIVE collection. Starring alongside him is the only DEFINITIVE "Jane Parker" in the guise of Maureen O'Sullivan, equally youthful in 1932, and "Veddy Veddy British", yet quickly smitten by the handsome Ape Man and amused by his ever-loyal "Cheetah". Together they create a believable and wonderful "Paradise" in the treetops; occasionally Jane lets herself get talked into some foolish plan by visitors from Civilization, yet rapidly learns the error of her ways back in the forgiving arms of her King of The Jungle. The adventure is MGM all the way "Do it BIG, DO it RIGHT, Give it CLASS!" And it is Campy Brilliance.Maureen left the series after Tarzan's NEW YORK ADVENTURE in 1942, and the series was never the same after Brenda Joyce stepped in as a Blonder Jane. These earlier movies are where the heart of the series rests, and never get boring , even after many viewings. The Kids will LOVE IT, and you will find yourself reliving many happy hours watching these movies many more times!Don't miss a VERY worthwhile investment, and LOTS of FUN! ;)

Super treat for a real Tar-fan

This DVD set is remarkable. It has brought me hours of enjoyment and transported me back to my childhood. The Weissmuller films have always been my favorite Tarzan movies. The Jock Mahoney and Gordon Scott versions are super but this collection has it all. I have watched the documentary several times. It alone would have been worth the price. The films are really great quality for their age. I highly recommend this collection. I hope that the younger generation will not let black and white films deter them from these great Tarzan adverntures.

The Tarzan Collection Starring Johnny Weissmuller DVD

I had bought this Tarzan DVD collection for my in-laws. The DVD quality was great. If you have family members that are in the same age group as my in-laws, you'll take them down a stroll of memory lane. By the way, according to them, Johnny Weissmuller was the best Tarzan of them all. With the DVD quality, if you pay close enough attention you'll see the swing that Tarzan used to swing on that was unseen with the old fashioned 8mm film. Just one warning, you might have the people who see these Tarzan movies hollering like Johnny Weissmuller when you see them.

King of the Apes!

It's not hard to tell that this these films were made before the rating codes were invented. Also before PETA got involved in animal protection. It''s amazing that Tarzan could wrestle a full grown lion into submission, armed only with a knife, and emerge without a single scratch. At the time, Johnny Weismuller owned swimming records that the experts claimed would "never be broken" Today, those records are regularly beaten by nine year old girls!
