Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny (DVD, 2007)

Liam Lynch, Jack Black, Kyle Gass|Theatrical release: 2006 | Rating: R (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

Jack Black and Kyle Gass's Tenacious D began life on an amusing yet little-seen HBO series about the band, which featured an array of comedy songs and glimpses into the personal lives of this hard-working outfit. But Black and Gass always had ambitions to take the Tenacious D concept further, so after a hefty bout of touring and recording comes the natural next step in their plans for world domination--a full-length feature film. The movie is directed by longtime collaborator Liam Lynch, and follows the duo as their megalomaniacal plans for the band burst into life. The film begins with a step back in time, where we find Black traveling to California with a head full of rock & roll dreams, and Gass strumming away on a lonely sidewalk. Once Black and Gass meet, they recognize that their Black Sabbath-sized dreams will only be realized if they can get hold of a magical guitar pick belonging to a local rock & roll-themed museum. But the portly rockers find a sizable hole burnt into their plans when their attempts at stealing the pick are thwarted by its original owner--Beelzebub himself. Existing fans who have seen the original HBO show will doubtless recognize the bulk of this story, as most of the ideas in THE PICK OF DESTINY have been rehashed from older Tenacious D material. But it's always a pleasure to see Jack Black embrace his inner rock god, and he frequently lets loose on the ridiculously silly songs that make up the Tenacious D oeuvre as the movie progresses. THIS IS SPINAL TAP still has the rock-satire genre tightly sewn up, but Black and Gass make a fun and entertaining addition to the canon with this first big-screen outing for Tenacious D.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3 stars out of 5 -- "[L]ewd, crude and often very funny....[The film] gathers the various strands of the D's genesis and gets down to the nitty gritty of their coming together."
Total Film - James White (01/01/2007)

"[B]lack] drinks deep from the well of classic rock & roll style, and you can hear all the vocal gods he's channeling....He's funny not in spit of his sincerity but because of it."
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (12/01/2006)

3 stars out of 5 -- "Black is back with rocking riffage....The result feels like Cheech and Chong meets Beavis & Butthead..."
Uncut - Michael Bonner (01/01/2007)

FUNNY!

Created: 02/01/08
I bought TENACIOUS D, THE PICK OF DESTINY based on other songs I had heard by the D, especially Wonderboy, which I absolutely love. Then too, I had seen Jack Black in SCHOOL OF ROCK and NACHO LIBRE. This movie is definitely more of a companion piece to SCHOOL OF ROCK; it has VERY BAD LANGUAGE that would not be appropriate for children! but for adults who love rock, who can tolerate bad language, and who LOVE SILLY HUMOR, this is a fantastic movie.

I was never expecting to laugh so hard; parts of the movie were so hilarious. Also, as a music fan, I left the movie with a new and deep respect for both Jack Black and Kyle Gass as musicians. Their music is acoustic, but they TOTALLY ROCK! Jack Black has great facility for cramming a thousand words into a rapidfire rock riff. And yes, as another reviewer mentioned, his pitch is spot on. He has an infallible instinct for the classic rock melodic turn. Kyle Gass is an awesome guitar player too (Sorry, I am always focused on the singer!) and the chemistry between the two leads is perfect. They have been great friends and have worked together for a long time and it shows.

Anything I would change about this movie? Well, there is a scene with Sasquatch, apparently a reference to the HBO show that I never saw, that runs on a bit long.

Otherwise the movie has a pretty good plot for a rock musical, great comedy, great music, great cameos and talented supporting actors. It should take its place near SPINAL TAP as one of the great rock comedies.

Cameos by BEN STILLER, MEATLOAF, RONNIE JAMES DIO, DAVE GROHL, AND TIM ROBBINS also make the movie exciting and fun to watch.

my ebay experience: I bought the movie for a dollar and paid $5 shipping. I am sure I couldn't have found it cheaper elsewhere at this time. When it arrived, I was surprised to see no jacket! but no bid deal, the disk was in fine shape. And as mentioned elsewhere there are a ton of extras on the DVD, so there is no need for a lot of jacket info.

I was super satisfied with my purchase.

Jack Black Yelling for 92 Minutes

I'm a huge Tenacious D fan but something was off.
I remember I saw this when I was 16 and it was the greatest movie in the world to me. After watching it again recently I felt kind of disappointed. I feel like 3 stars would be more appropriate but i can't bring myself to do it, god damn it!

I like the whole movie and there isn't anything I'd cut out but it just felt too long. This type of stuff worked perfectly for a show but for a full length movie is too much in one sitting. Once you get over Jack Black's screaming and telling people to engage in homosexual fellatio it gets kind of tiring. This is hard for me to say because I absolutely love every bit of it.

The best part of the movie is definitely the music. Tenacious D is an extremely talented band. Even if you don't think their songs are funny they're still good songs. That's why the D stands out so much. Other comedy music acts will just make funny songs but won't actually make good songs. But yeah so it's a good movie so f'n just watch it.

It's Tenacious D Time

Created: 14/02/07
For those who are not familiar with Tenacious D, then this review requires some caveats: This movie is a musical. It is lewd. It is filled with drug references. And Satan makes quite a few appearances as something of a humorous character.

For those who are Tenacious D fans, you're going to love it. It is very much in line with what they've done before, although toned down just a touch for the mainstream moviegoers. Although the film won't cause people who are not stoned to fall down in the aisles, it has its humorous moments. The music is entertaining, and the plot is exactly what you would expect - the two aspiring musicians go on a quest to find the Pick of Destiny, a guitar pick fashioned from the chipped tooth of Satan that allows mediocre musicians to become rock & roll gods. The plot culminates in a musical duel with Satan, to control the musical artifact.

Some rock legends (e.g. R.J. Dio) make appearances, as well as some fairly well-known actors (Tim Robbins, Ben Stiller). Much of the humor is drug-related or penis-related, and there are some parts you should probably make the kiddos cover their ears for. The movie is obviously not groundbreaking, and if you are looking for high art you've come to the wrong place. It's just good, dirty fun, and a wonderful way to waste an hour and a half.

I recommend the film for anyone with a sense of humor about sex, drugs, and rock & roll. Anyone easily offended should probably pick up the latest Disney offering instead.

Jack Black Rocks in Tenacious D

Created: 16/03/08
Jack Black and his first love..his band Tenacious D. Jack along with his buddy Kyle seek to find the secret to being a rock star by stealing the pick of Destiny, used by legendary rockers, while breaking into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Excellent cameos, Ben Stiller is Exce.Producer, Tim Robbins' character is one of the funniest parts of whole movie next to Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters playing the devil. The rock off is best part of whole movie. This is the kind of movie you have to watch more than once to appreciate all of the absurdities and catch all of JB's facial expressions!
