The various permutations of their lives are examined, including the daughter's bout with terminal cancer. TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is a deeply observed drama about the intimate relationship between a mother and daughter, based on the novel by Larry McMurtry. Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger are at their absolute best, with terrific support from Jack Nicholson, Jeff Daniels, and John Lithgow. Defines many ways that we can love each other

Created: 27/03/06
The relationship in this movie, between the mother, played by Shirley MacLaine, and the daughter, played by Debra Winger, is certainly appropriately displayed in this film. A mother who loves her daughter, but has trouble maintaining a relationship with her, especially after she chooses to marry Jeff Daniels. Raised in a well to do home, the daughter takes a step down in marrying Jeff Daniels, at least that is how her mother feels. Throughout the movie, the relationship between mother and daughter grows into a real love, but it is all cut short by the fact that the daughter develops cancer and is dying.

The thing that I didn't really like was that Jeff Daniels has an affair with another woman and has chosen her over his family. The character of Jeff Daniels is the one that you want to hate, and one could see how the mother would not accept him as her son-in-law. Moving his family to another state certainly strained any relationship that the mother and son-in-law may have had.

A very brief affair that Debra Winger has with John Lithgow, is by far a stretch of the imagination and seems like a pay back to Jeff Daniels for his affair.

The real surprise is the relationship that develops between the mother and her next door neighbor, a former astronaut, played by Jack Nicholson. This relationship will become the final event of the movie, leaving the grandchildren to be raised by their grendmother and not their father.

I loved this DVD. It showed how a relationship with a mother went from not very good to wonderful over a long period of time. Both mother and daughter needed to grow up. I loved all the actors, and Jack Nicholson was great. This is one of his best movies. I laughed and cried. It makes me appreciate the wonderful relationship I have with my mother and daughter even more. Wonderful movie at a great price. I will cherish it forever.

Well, if you love Jack Nicholson (I do) and Shirley McClain (I do) then you have to see this movie. Even if you don't love them before seeing this movie you will certainly love thier acting. This movie will make me laugh and cry everytime I see it. Debra Winger is excellent also. A classic.

An excellent movie and so true to a couple I have known. It seems so true to life, and I love all of the actors. I thought Jack Nicholson was amazing in this role and have always liked Shirly MacLaine & Debra Winger. It was a long movie but worth it.

What a very touching story. I think this movie portrayed how people in real life actually react and feel, although not always fair. Regardless of what bad things may happen in our life, children, jobs, long distance moves, sickness, life still goes on. We ultimately are not in control and this movie shows that. It isn't the circumstance we are in but how we react to those circumstances. This movie is sure to be a classic for years to come.
