Tetris DS (Nintendo DS, 2006)

This game, and the amount of copies sold, proves that Tetris is alive and doing very well. The ability to touch the screen and move blocks in the "Touch" mode is a neat and new twist. The missions modes are mixed with some ol' themes from Nes games of years gone by (Zelda, Mario, Metroid).

"Catch" has you trying to catch blocks in the middle of the screen and try to make cubes out of the tetris pieces. You can rotate your blocks in the middle of the screen, but you cannot change the falling blocks! Great fun!

"Push" has you competing with another player (one on the top of the screen, the other at the bottom) to make lines and "push" the middle line to your opponents end of the screen. This game eats up plenty of spare time!

To add to the madness, most of the games are available through wi-fi, so you'll be playing for hours!!

Welcome to Tetris DS, a puzzle game with a handfull of modes to play, most in which involve differently shaped block clusters falling from the top of the screen.

Tetris DS is the descendant of the 1980s game simply known as Tetris. Both are highly addictive, can be challenging, and known for it's great music.

In this game, Tetris DS, the music, as well as the colorful visuals are in dedication to nintendo games from the 1980s. While playing the "standard" mode, you'll see classic characters like Mario, Link, Ice climbers, Samus, and Donkey Kong. You'll also hear music from their classic games too.

When you first turn on the screen you will see the Single Player, Muliplayer, Wi-Fi, Options, and Records buttons. After selecting single player, you can choose from a total of six different modes of tetris. Standard is the classic gameplay, while touch is a great new twist on tetris gameplay using the Nintendo DS stylus.

All in all Tetris DS is a great addition to any DS game library. If you're a fan of puzzle games or just old-school games in general, Tetris DS will be a sure-fire win for you.

I would place this as excellent if it added more than two multiplayer modes. The first multiplayer mode allows up to 10 DS players to connect using only one cart!!! The mode also allows you to add items which are all based on Mario items (Mushroom will give opponents blocks with rockets on them forcing them done super quick, Banana changes the block configuration on you opponents screen, Lightening makes it so opponents can't change the position of their blocks, Shell to remove blocks from the bottom rows, and a Star to protect you from getting affected by other people's items as well as give you straight blocks for a short period of time). I love the whole Nintendo theme with Zelda, Mario, and DK. The second mode is called push that allows two players (still only using one cart) to play a tug-o-war match. I would like to see more modes for the multiplayer portion but as it is, it's a great game that is addicting as heck with multiple players!!!!

This game is great, however I wish that it had some sort of progressive game mode where you go to different levels after mastering one. Maybe it does and I haven't figured it out yet. I don't care for how small the actual screen is either. There is a Mario brother screen saver type thing that takes up half of the screen and it is kind of distracting and definitely frustrating to look at every time I decide to play a game.

At first I was reluctant to buy Tetris on a new generation console because I loved this game on the original Gameboy and the Super Nintendo. But since I was able to purchase one at a good price, I bought it on eBay. And now I am so glad I did. With six game modes, I am able to play standard Tetris, play download play with my friends and family, and can play the new modes as if I were playing minigames, and at the same time it helps me brush up my Tetris skills and also test how well I can actually can play.
