Album Notes
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Bill Wyman (vocals, bass); Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Brian Jones (guitar, various instruments); Charlie Watts (drums).Additional personnel includes: J.P. Jones (strings); Nicky Hopkins (piano).Part druggy experiment, part musical rivalry with the Fab Four, and a total anomaly in the Rolling Stones' catalogue, THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST contains at least three trippy classics in "Citadel," "She's a Rainbow," and "2000 Light Years From Home." That it also contains an extensive sample of Bill Wyman snoring and an eight-minute stoned jam that begins with the timeless phrase "Where's that joint?" is a measure of SATANIC MAJESTIES' breadth of genius and folly. There's a lot going on here--try comparing the wayward Eastern atmospheres of "Gomper" to anything on BEGGAR'S BANQUET, and marvel that you're listening to the same band. The fact that Jagger and Richards could still come up with the unimpeachably charming "She's a Rainbow"--baroque pop at its finest--and a fair stab at heavy R&B in "The Lantern," while attempting to negotiate the band's rocky passage through Flower Power is a tribute to their vision, their perseverance, and their drugs of choice.

Editorial Reviews
8 (out of 10) - ...a bold move which infuriated some critics at the time, but who can argue with the languorous psychedelia of `2,000 Light Years From Home', the anthemic innocence of `She's A Rainbow' or the wit of `2,000 Man'? Marvellous...

Off The Beaten Path For The Stones

Created: 07/12/06
The first time I listened to this album, I'm like what the hell is this? It's weird and at times annoying and immediately I hated it. But after I listened to it a few times it grew on me, and it was yet something different for the Stones. They've done almost every genre, so why not weird, psychodelic, medevil, whatever you want to call it. They put in some weird citar sounds and it sounds like it should be the soundtrack of a medevil Robin Hood on drugs movie.

Casual fans probably won't like this album, it sounds absolutely nothing like anything they've ever done before or since. But die hard fans will appreciate the bold move that the Stones made, doing something a little off kilter. The songs are experimental, and fresh for those who weren't around to hear them when they were originally released. The only song I knew before listening to this album was She's a Rainbow, but there are a lot of gems on this one if you give it a chance. Citadel is probably my favorite song on the album, it's a little more like the Stones older material. 2000 Light Years From Home and 2000 Man are also excellent tracks. But this album isn't about single tracks, it's about the album as a whole, which is an experimental piece of work that may drive some people crazy, but for those with patience and an open mind, I think they'll find this a true work of art.

I read some reviews by others and found that it's either you love it or you hate it. Maybe that's the way it is with this album. I personally love it, but it took me a few listens to feel that way. It's definitely different so I gives kudos to the Stones for doing something new, regardless if their fans or critics liked it or not.

The Underrated Stones Album

Created: 10/11/08
Tradition has it that this is the Stones' blooper album and frankly I don't agree with all the bad press. Some reviewers say this is an attempt to copycat Sergeant Peppers' but I see NO relationship. Every artist at the time was doing their "psychedelic" album. I really enjoy this one, especially "2000 Light Years from Home" and "Citadel". And also, this is one of the last opportunities Brian Jones had to appear on record. I DO recommend it.

If you are looking for a classic rock album to add to your music collection, then stumble upon The Rolling Stones: Their Satanic Majesties Request! This rare gem of an album has a unique sound that is reminiscent to The Beatles: Sergeant Peppper's Lonely Hearts Club Band!

The Rolling Stones, like their rock counterparts, The Beatles, were experimenting with different sound effects for the psychedelic rock era (late 1960's) and it has been an influence like the pioneer of that genre, Jimi Hendrix! One could easily discover that it has influenced musicians down through the decades. Songs to check out: "Citadel", "In Another Land", and "Gomper" to give you a preview of the excellence of this album. This is a 10 track album.

Students of music can appreciate the exotic sound of this album. Even people born after the 1960's. This is a must that cannot be missed! Enjoy the magical journey!

Not what I expect from The Stones

Very weird album, actually surreal. Reccomended for those who have opened certain doors of the mind. I wanted this album to get the song 2000 Light Years, I never heard the studio version.

Probably not the the best album of the Stones. However the original line up with Brian Jones, is most people's favorite.
Fantastic art cover, some great songs. Enjoy it!!
