    Album Notes
Full Title: There's Gonna Be A Storm: The Complete Recordings 1966-1969.The Left Banke includes: Tomm Finn, Jeff Winfield, Michael Brown, George Cameron, Steve Martin.Producers include: Steve & Bill Jerome, Michael Brown, The Left Banke, Arthur Schroek, Gene Radice.Compilation producer: Bill Inglot.Liner Note Author: Andrew Sandoval.Recording information: 1966-1969.Arrangers: John Abbot ; Paul Leka; Artie Schroeck.THERE'S GONNA BE A STORM is classically influenced melodic 60s pop at its most gorgeous. The Left Banke was led by keyboardist/ songwriter Michael Browne, whose main influences were the British Invasion (Beatles, Zombies) and the Baroque (his father was a prominent New York City orchestral musician). The band's secret weapon, however, was Steve Martin, whose haunting near falsetto vocal style can bear comparison with the Zombies' great Colin Blunstone.Although the group is principally remembered for their two big hits--the widely covered "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina"--the reality is they had a lot of top grade material. The two-CD set THERE'S GONNA BE A STORM collects just about everything the group recorded, including "Desiree," the utterly haunting over-the-top masterpiece whose commercial failure essentially ended the group's career (in its day-- 1967--it was reputedly the most expensive single record ever produced).

A Quality CD From A Great Band

    Created: 03/04/08
The Left Banke are known primarily for two songs: "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina" but their discography offers so much more. Unlike alot of other pop groups of the mid/late 60's era, their albums were of high caliber and not full of filler or cover tunes.

The Left Banke's first album, Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina is definitely their best. Lead singer Steve Martin-Caro's voice and Michael Brown's songwriting and harpiscord playing, along with the background harmonies of Tom Finn and George Cameron are just magical. The only song that sounds a bit odd is the country sounding "What Do You Know."

The second album, Left Banke Too has some great songs like "Desiree" and "There's Gonna Be A Storm." This album also featured George Cameron and Tom Finn sharing leads on some of the songs. Tom Finn has a great voice and in my opinion should have done a solo LP.

This collection also includes three songs recorded under The Left Banke name that feature Bert Sommer on lead vocals. These songs include "Men Are Building Sand," "And Suddenly," and the Tom Fair composition, "Ivy, Ivy." The only original Left Banke member on these songs is Michael Brown.

There are also two tracks which are only Steve Martin-Caro and Michael Brown along with Tom Kaye's band. These tracks are "Myrah" and it's flip side, the somewhat depressing "Pedestal."

In all, this is a great collection of the Mercury catalogue.

This anthology is now only available as a MP3 album or used CD.

it's astounding that a group could author 2 such masterpieces as "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina" and have the rest of their catalogue be such crap. I was really pulling for these guys but only expererienced a couple of moments from some of the earlier stuff; but that was it. The further their career went, the worse it got. Too bad, so sad.

    yeah OK BUT.............

Don't quite see the hype of this one. Good 60s pop but I am having a hard time swallowing the reverence. Vanilla is best when contrasted with some more strong flavors.
