Scariest Alien since ... well, Alien!
Created: 11/09/06
I am not one for killers from outer space - except for the Aliens series! - but this is one of my favorite movies of all times.
Master of horror John Carpenter directs this thriller set in the Antartic. A group of US scientists are just minding their own business when a dog comes running across the snow. The dog is being shot at and the US group fearing for their safety shoot at the men. What they don't know is that the dog is infected and soon they will be infected too.
Pretty gory with good special effects and great acting by Kurt Russell and crew. HD just makes this movie even scarier and more suspenseful. The scariest part is the actual location, it is just snow and ice as far as the eye can see. Night is pitch black and there is something hunting you - AAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!

One of the Best Horror movies ever!

Most scary movies are dumb and unbelievable - not The Thing! I love this movie and get the creeps every time I watch it (probably about 15 times). It had been a few years and I decided to add it to my dvd collection and was delighted to discover that it still has all the right stuff after 26 years. Kurt Russell is great as is the entire cast...a remote Antarctic research station becomes a paranoid, terrifying laboratory where the ability to identify "The Thing" and destroy it probably holds the future of man on earth in the balance. If you like tension, uncertainty and a dynamic alien lifeform, you will love The Thing. John Carpenter hit a huge home run with this one!!!

About time, too.

They did it right. No overdone artifacting, no shadow-hiss and no wavering on stable shots. Well, not as much as usual, anyway, and less than most HD conversions.
The audio is kept clean and moves appropriately. It was great seeing this movie in such clarity and with such sound. I waited a long time and it was worth it.
If you expected a review of the movie, then...
Nearly as good as the original! Nearly. Changes were made to keep up with a more modern look, and those changes made sense and fit well.
The new characters held their own and the acting was excellent!
The special effects were ground breaking in their day and hold up even today along with the best.
We lose the vegetable factor of the original for a more viral/microbiological standpoint, and again, the change works well.
If you liked the original black and white, and you liked movies like Dawn/Day/Night of the Living Dead, then you'll love this new classic.
Though it is an old movie today, having it out in HD/5.1 is terrific!

Got that old school suspense feel to it

They just don't make 'em like this anymore. This movie has that Old school suspense feel to it. The music plays a huge part in the feel of the movie and instead of loads of special effects , the actors actually act the part to pull you in. Definitely a classic movie that is worthy of adding to your collection. I remember watching this movie years ago when I was much younger and the memories of it have stayed with me over the years. I couldn't wait to get it on HD DVD and see it again.
Definitely has that 80's movie feel to it , but in my opinion , the 80's brought us some of the best music and movies ever created. A really good movie to add to your suspense collection.

A clissic given new life

What can be said about John Carpenter's 'The Thing' that hasn't already been said. This movie broke new boundaries for special effects. Although Carpenter himself considered his 'The Thing' to be a continuance from the film 'The Thing From Another World' from the 50's more than a remake, the film stands well enough on it's own without the need to watch the original. Like 'Halloween' and 'The Fog' this Carpenter classic is getting a do-over.
This movie has been a staple in my collection since the 80's. Getting in high def totally unwarrants any re-make. This movie has been brough to new life and probable would have faired very well if released in theatres again in high-def for a new generation of fans!
