    Album Notes
The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar); Roger Daltrey (vocals); John Entwistle (bass); Keith Moon, Kenney Jones (drums).Recorded between 1964 & 1991. Includes 64-page booklet.THE GIFT SET includes the 30 YEARS OF MAXIMUM R&B box set, the 30 YEARS OF MAXIMUM R&B LIVE video, and a tee-shirt.The compilers of MAXIMUM R&B deserve credit for squeezing the collected works of the Who onto these four CDs. The Who's transition from singles band to something more ambitious is well chronicled on disc one. It contains early singles like "Zoot Suit" and "I'm the Face," classics like "My Generation" and "I Can't Explain," near-classics like "I'm a Boy" and early rarities like their take on the Stones' "The Last Time." The second disc charts the band's transition toward conceptual rock and opera, beginning with a selection from THE WHO SELL OUT and moving into their seminal rock opera "TOMMY." The band is also captured at their blistering best in cuts from legendary LIVE AT LEEDS.Disc three covers the early '70s, when the band was at a creative peak, turning out state-of-the-art rock with QUADROPHENIA and WHO'S NEXT. Songs like "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" still explode like Thor's hammer. The final disc has a little of everything, rare live versions, radio-only oddities, and the best of their late-'70s and early-'80s output. The later works demonstrate that the Who continued make great music even in the twilight of their career.

    Very good package

    Created: 05/06/06
This box set has all the best songs by The Who and some more obscure titles. It is a mix of studio and live recordings. My only negative comments are in regards to the second disc which focused on the album "The Who Sell Out". I didn't like the direction the band went on this effort and was not impressed with the songs on this disc. However, I was very pleased with the other discs. The set comes with a booklet containing a substantial amount of information about the band. I read some comments about this set on other sites that I totally disagree with because they seemed to assume the purchaser already had a large catalog of music by The Who. If you don't already have many Who albums, I highly recommend this box set as a way to capture their best music in one purchase.

Not the best set for the casual Who fan

    Created: 11/02/08
I have enjoyed listening to this 4-disc boxed set. However, I don't think it's the best set for the casual fan of the Who as I was disappointed with many of the track selections. I think this set is best suited to the super-fan who already has all of the original releases since this set goes to great lengths to include a lot of previously unreleased tracks, most of which I did not enjoy. I prefer the box sets that include both the top hits along with some quality recordings that you may have missed. This didn't achieve this for me and I find myself skipping over about half of the tracks.

So if you're a casual fan of the Who, you may be happier with a greatest hits compilation supplemented with a few of your favorite album releases.

A fantastic collection of some of the best, classic rock from a legendary band. All the best songs are there that they are famous for.

What a compilation of rock anthems! The Who are one of the most intriguing bands. Some songs sound really weird while others hit you like a baseball bat. Always fun to listen to.
