The Three Lives of Thomasina (DVD, 2004)

Don Chaffey, Patrick McGoohan|Theatrical release: 1964 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

A charming, excellently acted live-action Disney drama about a young Scottish girl's love for her cat, THE THREE LIVES OF THOMASINA deals with complex issues of death and parent-child relationships without being scary or needlessly sentimental. Mary MacDhui (Karen Dotrice), lives in a rural village with her veterinarian father Andrew (Patrick McGoohan), a bitter, faithless widower who is criticized by his assistant for having no feelings towards the animals he treats. Mary's only real object of affection is her self-absorbed marmalade cat, Thomasina (enhanced by the narration of Elspeth March). When the town blind man's dog is critically injured, Andrew does his duty. At the same time, however, Thomasina has fallen ill with tetanus, his frantic daughter interrupting the dog's surgery and begging Andrew to save her. Impatient and busy, Andrew euthanizes Thomasina. The distraught Mary is temporarily consoled by an elaborate funeral march planned by her concerned friends (Jack Stewart, Matthew Garber, and Denis Gilmore), but is so angry and sad that she disowns Andrew. Thomasina herself soon finds herself in kitty heaven, in a memorable scene of Egyptian cat-goddess statues and hundreds of regal-looking Siamese. However, she is back with the living again when a young, solitary woman who cures sick animals named Lori (Susan Hampshire), thought to be a witch, notices at the grave site that the cat is not, in fact, dead, the act helping the lives of Lori, Thomasina, Mary, and her father, to become entwined.

Heart warming tail

I've looked and looked for this movie for a while on DVD. I first saw the film on Wonderful World of Color (Disney) on TV. Movie is tender and not overly sentimental, better than Pollyanna. Hampshire was a hotty. McGoohan is great as a less than involved Vet & Father who is trying to communicate with his love-lost daughter who directs all of her affection toward her cat Thomasina. I have to admit I got a little teary-eyed during this fiom Thomasina's voice over adds to the picture without getting silly. Love the Cat heaven sequence -- extras on this DVD are good too!

Classic Disney Movie deals with Tough subjects well.

Created: 03/09/07
This movie had fairy-tale like beauty and lots of characters that make it hard to forget. The movie deals with tough subjects like death of a parent and pets. The scenes are overly stylized at times, but are pleasing for young children who don't know any better. They also tend to soften some of the more heartwrenching scenes with these prettier than normal landscapes. For parents looking for a feel good movie that deals with the problems of a death of a family pet, with a happy ending, I'd recommend this movie highly. It also has two of the children actors who are in the Mary Poppins movie, and they are quite entertaining. Lots of animals and focusing on the caretaking of them is also good for young ones interested in animal care or the general love of animals.

Not A Predictable Mushy Story - Loved It!!

Created: 06/01/11
The Three Lives of Thomasina is a very unique, clever story. While it is a Disney produced movie, it has many elements that are often shocking, which adds to the entertainment value. My husband recently watched it for the first time with me and he absolutely loved it. I saw this movie for the first time as a child and I am thrilled that I got as much of a kick out of it now as I did back then. The children's antics, the 'witch' playing along with her reputation, the cat narrating parts of the story - all very cleverly done and thoroughly enjoyable. As far as recommending this movie? My husband and I give it a huge, "Aye!"

Great movie for cat lovers

Created: 29/04/08
I bought it because I had a kitten named "Tom" who later I discovered was a "Thomasina." Much to my amazement, the main character in the movie was named the same way. For 1961. there were great special affects when Thomasina was between lives and spent time in sort of a cat heaven. You can't help but fall in love with Thomasina, and although it was surely intended for a kid's audience, I thoroughly enjoyed it at 53.

When Thomasina falls through space during her phase between lives, look closely, as they casted that cat with the wrong gender. No disappointment though because the cat surely was a great performer. (That's ok, Peter Pan was portrayed by Mary Martin as I recall)
