Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (DVD, 2006, Full Frame)

Tim Burton, Caroline Thompson, Johnny Depp|Theatrical release: 2005 | Rating: PG (MPAA)

Movie synopsis

In the same vein as EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Tim Burton continues to combine wholesome comedy and creepy horror with this tale of a mild-mannered Victorian gentleman, Victor (Johnny Depp), who accidentally marries a mysterious corpse bride (Helena Bonham-Carter) instead of his intended, Victoria (Emily Watson). Victor soon discovers that the Land of the Dead holds more fun than frights and begins to fall in love with his innocent bride. Meanwhile, Victoria has been drawn into a scam of a marriage and may not escape with her life. As time runs out for everyone, can there be a resolution in which everyone gets what he or she deserves?Building on their past productive relationship (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, ED WOOD), Tim Burton and Johnny Depp create a colorful riot of a film that revives the increasingly rare method of stop-motion animation. Over the period of 10 years that Burton worked to complete the film, new techniques were created to speed the process, including a new way to change the character models' facial expressions by using gears in their heads. Of particular note is the lilting score by Danny Elfman, another longtime Burton collaborator. Fun for adults and children, CORPSE BRIDE is another welcome walk through Tim Burton's twisted mind.

Movie trailer and editorial reviews

3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[I]t's warped and wonderfully effervescent....Burton evokes a darkly erotic obsession that recalls Edgar Allan Poe and Hitchcock's VERTIGO."
Rolling Stone - Peter Travers (09/22/2005)

"As an achievement in macabre visual wizardry, TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE has to reckoned some sort of marvel....A sculpted musical dreamscape of kiddie-gothic expressionist design." -- Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly - Owen Gleiberman (09/23/2005)

"The visuals are dazzling and the characters vividly rendered in caricature fashion. Danny Elfman's score may be his best yet, with songs that are witty and melodic."
USA Today - Claudia Puig (09/16/2005)

"The new film showcases the subtle effects the technique can manage, with texture and detail, lighting and costuming still beyond anything computers can achieve..."
Sight and Sound - Kim Newman (11/01/2005)

5 stars out of 5 -- "A return to form for Tim Burton....A bravura, tag-along triumph in its own right."
Uncut - Kevin Maher (03/01/2006)

"[With] a few moments of graceful, melancholy lyricism rare for any kind of movie, let alone an animated one."
Premiere - Glenn Kenny (03/01/2006)

The CORPSE BRIDE

Corpse Bride, guided by a Russian folk tale about a murdered bride's love for a man who happens to be alive! Tim Burton roughed out a few sketches and gave character designer Carlos Grangel free rein. Screenwriters John August, Caroline Thompson and Pamela Pettler updated the story to Victorian England, and a talented cast signed on to do the voices.

Heading this list of talented actors is Johnny Depp, who brings a touching tenderness to Victor Van Dort, a timid man whose his parents (Tracey Ullman and Paul Whitehouse) arrange to marry him off to Victoria (Emily Watson), the daughter of the titled but penniless Everglots (Joanna Lumley and Albert Finney). Victor is so nervous at the wedding rehearsal the pastor (Christopher Lee) tells him to leave until he learns his vows.

In the forest, Victor practices by putting a ring on a tree branch protruding out from the ground that turns into a dead woman in a wedding gown and she quickly accepts his proposal. Whatever is Victor to do, he was getting to like Victoria, but The Corpse Bride, voiced by Helena Bonham Carter, has taken a shine to him and leads him unwillingly to the Land of the Dead! This is where the film hits its stride.

The best part of all is the love story. Victor is attracted to both women. In the guise of a family film, it evokes a darkly erotic obsession that would be a test for any filmmaker, and Burton aced it!

Very creative film! The visuals are amazing!

This is one of the funnest movies EVER! The animation is outstanding .... a tad bit gross at times (hey most of the cast is dead!) .... but amazing!! I love the message that Love and Commitment are still important values as is keeping your word. The plot is fun and interesting and it has a happy ending!! The "bad guy" gets what he deserves too! A bonus we all relish in the end and the kids enjoyed that! The songs are fun too! My girls are 8 and 11 and have watched this movie over and over and OVER many times and still roar with laughter and speak some of the words with the different characters! Tooo cute! And the most adorable dead puppy, Scraps, that you will ever see! The movie is rated PG because of a few mild cuss words and some scary scenes. I would not recommend for younger children!! designedbydonna <><

Corpse Bride

Victor is extremely nervous about getting married to a complete stranger. He ends up finding that he likes Victoria, but when practicing his lines, he keeps messing everything up. Everyone is making fun of him, and yelling to get it right. After so long, he runs out of the church and into the woods next to a cemetary, practicing his lines on trees and anything around him. Finally he gets it right with full confidence, and slides the ring onto Emilys(corpse bride) hand, thinking it was a branch sticking out of the snow. Now Victor is living among the dead with his mistake of a bride.(Emilys parents wouldnt approve of the man she wanted to marry, so their plan was to run away. Emily was waiting for her love to show up next to a tree to get married, but that never happened.)

Cute little romance story. Just as Unique as The nightmare before Christams. Its funny. Among the living it's dark and dreary, but amongst the dead it's much more lively and colorful. I enjoyed it. Suitable for all audiences.

I purchased this movie and watched it for the first time. I loved it!! Tim Burton's Corpse Bride carries on in the dark, romantic tradition of Tim Burton's classic films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Set in a 19th century European village, this animated feature follows the story of Victor (voiced by Johnny Depp), a young man who is whisked away to the underworld and wed to a mysterious Corpse Bride, while his real bride, Victoria, waits in the land of the living. Though life in the Land of the Dead proves to be a lot more colorful than his strict Victorian upbringing, Victor learns that there is nothing in this world, or the next, that can keep him away from his one true love. It's a tale of optimism, romance and a very lively afterlife, told in classic Tim Burton style.

love this movie

i love any tim burton movies... they all have a dark musical humor about them. you dont really see movies anymore with the clay animation, and i think its amazing how its done. i cant even begin to imagine the time, patience, work, or effort it takes just to do a movie like this. i do have to say, out of all of them: nightmare before christmas, james & the giant peach, beetle juiece, edward scissor hands, and sweeney todd ect.. that corpse bride is my favorite. i love the dark romantic storyline, and how he throws a twisted sense of humor into it! well done!!!
